Green light for nearly 70 new affordable homes on East Kilbride housing development

A deal has been struck to build nearly 70 affordable new homes as part of an East Kilbride housing development.

Taylor Wimpey West Scotland has confirmed that it has reached agreement with South Lanarkshire Council to deliver 67 affordable homes for social rent at Benthall Farm near Auldhouse.

They will form part of the wider master plan for the area.

The conclusion of this agreement paves the way for a range of one and two bedroom cottage flats, two and three bedroom terraced, two and three bedroom semi-detached as well as four bedroom detached homes to be built within the development of private new homes.

South Lanarkshire Council will take ownership of 67 ‘turn-key’ homes which are ready to move into the day that keys are exchanged.

Alison Henderson, Special Projects Manager for Taylor Wimpey West Scotland, said: “Reaching the conclusion of this agreement for Benthall Farm marks another milestone on the journey towards creating a diverse community that complements the existing neighbourhoods of East Kilbride.

“As part of our Section 75 agreement, we have already made contributions of over £2m towards education, roads and the community and we remain committed to working closely with South Lanarkshire Council to ensure the local community of East Kilbride continues to reap the benefits of our long-term investment in the area.”

Daniel Lowe, executive director of housing and technical resources at South Lanarkshire Council, said: “The council is delighted to be working with Taylor Wimpey to achieve delivery of 67 new homes in East Kilbride.

“This is an exciting new development for the area and the houses will be delivered by the contractor to all modern construction, energy efficiency and sustainability standards.

“With the contribution of affordable housing funding from the Scottish Government towards this project, this is a great example of working in partnership to deliver the right type of houses, in the right places, for our local communities.”

Councillor Josh Wilson, South Lanarkshire Council’s chair of housing and technical resources, added: “New affordable housing is vitally needed across South Lanarkshire and, indeed, Scotland as a whole, and so I am delighted to see the plans for these 67 homes that will help us to enhance the level of provision in East Kilbride.

“The houses will not only be affordable to rent but will be economical to run and I look forward to seeing their development at Benthall Farm.”
