Green light for Kellie Harrington to go for gold again at Paris 2024 as IOC include Boxing

Kellie Harrington will be able to go for gold again in the Paris Olympics in 2024 after the IOC confirmed that Boxing will be included in the Games.

There was a question mark over the sport's participation as the International Olympic Committee deliberated on its future - for now, it is not a part of the LA '28 Olympics.

A debate will take place at some stage on whether that situation will change - however for these Games at least, the threat of missing out has passed.

That is good news for not just Harrington and her fellow elite Irish boxing hopefuls - including Aidan Walsh, who won bronze in Tokyo last year before Harrington's golden moment - but also for Irish sport as more participants in the ring have won medals for Ireland than in any other sport - 18 out of 35 in total.

Just as in Tokyo, the IOC Task Force will take charge of proceedings for both the tough qualification process and for the Games themselves, with the IBA (International Boxing Association) again frozen out after a controversial presidential election.

IOC sports director Kit McConnell commented: “The IOC felt enough was enough and in the interest of the boxing community, the boxing qualifying events and competition will not be run under the authority of the IBA.

"This decision is centred on the athletes and the need for certainty leading up to Paris in 2024."
