Green fingered Lanarkshire volunteers help out at communal dementia garden

Green fingered volunteers have been helping a communal dementia garden in Motherwell to help those suffering from poor mental health.

Three partners groups met at the gardens in Findlay Street to decide on the areas they are going to cultivate.

Ian McGurk, headteacher at Firpark School, visited with two members of staff.

It was decided that one class were going to tidy up the gardens as part of their community work for their Duke of Edinburgh Course while another will plant a raised bed in the garden.

Also visiting on the same day was Maureen Todd from the Health and Wellness Hub.

She also chose an area of the garden to grow vegetables to make soup for the participants in the Health and Wellness Hub.

Motherwell South East and Ravenscraig councillor, Agnes Magowan, told us : “I am delighted that so many groups in Motherwell are gaining benefit from the gardens and they are being fully used.

“Thank goodness the gardens have come back to life and are benefitting so many people in the community.

“Clydesdale Community Initiative are there every Thursday and they have erected the gazebo.

"This will be useful as a shelter for potting up and meetings when there are inclement weather conditions.

“They are going to hang hanging baskets round the structure and are also cultivating an area of the garden which will attract birds and butterflies which are known to be relaxing and relieve anxiety.”
