Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst and coach Matt LaFleur will use the information and evaluations gained from a full training camp and three preseason games to help guide the difficult decisions necessary to trim the team’s roster to 53 players by Tuesday afternoon’s deadline.
While a couple dozen players will be released over the next two days, many will return on the team’s 16-player practice squad. After the waiver period expires on Wednesday, the Packers can start building out the practice squad.

The Packers released veteran punter Pat O’Donnell on Monday.
The team’s first cut signals a big change at punter, where Daniel Whelan is now expected to take over. O’Donnell, 32, was signed as a free agent in 2022 and was the team’s punter for all 17 games last season. Whelan is an Ireland native who earned All-XFL honors in 2023. He’s only 24 years old and on a $750,000 deal for this season.
