Greek traffic police have issued a warning to drivers in areas affected by ice and snow, urging them to use snow chains following reports of long traffic jams near ski resorts due to cars getting stuck on the roads.
Authorities cautioned drivers against heading to the popular ski resort on Mount Parnassos as it was closed due to inclement weather. Additionally, access roads to the top of Mount Parnitha, located on the outskirts of Athens, were shut down due to heavy snowfall.
On Christmas Day, a significant traffic congestion stretching approximately 5 kilometers near the Parnassos ski resort was attributed to a combination of electric vehicles breaking down on the road leading down the mountain and other vehicles becoming immobilized on the snowy roads because they lacked snow chains or winter tires.
The police emphasized the importance of drivers being equipped with and using snow chains in areas where snow or ice is present on the roads. They also advised motorists to stay informed about weather forecasts to ensure safe travel.
Greece's mountainous regions frequently experience snowfall during the winter months. A new cold front is expected to hit Greece starting Friday, bringing heavy rainfall, gale force winds, and snowfall in many mountainous areas.
