Greek street food favourites Acropolis open up in Newcastle's Grainger Market

A true taste of Greece has arrived at the Grainger Market.

Acropolis Authentic Street Food have opened up a cafe in the covered market, with a mission to 'feed the citizens' of Newcastle with hearty potions of Greek gyros, wraps and grilled kalamaki platters.

If you've visited North East food markets, or seen Acropolis's food truck, you'll know what to expect. The Acropolis team have earned rave reviews from diners since they first started trading from a market stall three years ago.

Grainger Market customers are greeted by the sight of an open kitchen, so they can watch their meals being prepared by the busy chefs.

Food is available to eat in or take-away.

Founders Viktor Tachan, Filip Tachan and Yusuf Yenil saw a gap in Newcastle's food scene, for the filling and flavourful food which you'll find served up from small shops on Viktor and Filip's home island of Salamis.

Yusuf, who worked as a head chef in Newcastle before going into business with his friends Filip and Viktor, said: "We wanted it to be like a rustic version of Greece, where you can find these shops everywhere.

"In England, when you see something Greek, it's a restaurant. We wanted to do something more like the street food you get in Greece.

"It's like fish and chips in England - this is like that, but for Greece."

The Acropolis lads came with strict instructions from Viktor and Filip's former boss and mentor back in Salamis that they have Greece's reputation to maintain.

Yusuf: "We've been told, 'Don't serve food if you're not going to eat it. Serve the best quality food'.

"He's always said, 'Feed the citizens'. It means big portions."

The menu features wraps, like gyros (rotisserie cooked meat, vegetables or halloumi, served in a stuffed flatbread) and kalamaki -  or souvlakia - platters of grilled meat and vegetables, served with sides and sauces.

Vegetarian and meat options are available, as are salads and sides, including halloumi fries.

Filip, who moved to Newcastle in 2013,  added: "This food is what we know, that's what we wanted to do. My island is a small island and there's more than 20 shops like this."

Viktor added: "On one road there may be four or five shops - but they'll all be slightly different."

Acropolis serves a breakfast menu and plans to apply for an alcohol licence.
