Greek Pop Star Refuses To Perform In Turkey

Madonna's concert at Copacabana beach, in Rio de Janeiro

Greek pop star Despina Vandi recently made headlines after refusing to perform at a charity concert in Cesme, Turkey. The 54-year-old singer's decision stemmed from her objection to performing on a stage adorned with the Turkish flag and a portrait of the country's founding father, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

Despite the audience eagerly awaiting her performance, Vandi stood her ground and chose not to appear after her request to remove the flag and poster was denied by the event organizers, the Turkish Education Foundation. In an Instagram post, Vandi expressed her gratitude to the audience for their support but criticized the organizers for turning the event into a politically charged affair.

The incident occurred at a time when Turkey and Greece are making efforts to improve their strained relations. The audience in Cesme's open-air amphitheater expressed disappointment with boos upon learning the reason for Vandi's absence.

Cesme's mayor, Lal Denizli, addressed the crowd, emphasizing the importance of national symbols and stating that there was no force that could compel them to remove the flag or Ataturk's portrait. He urged the audience not to boo Vandi and called for her immediate departure from the town.

The ongoing tensions between Turkey and Greece, rooted in territorial disputes and historical conflicts, have led to multiple confrontations over the years. However, recent diplomatic efforts have seen leaders from both countries engaging in dialogue to normalize relations.

Despite Vandi's absence, many spectators chose to stay and enjoy a performance by a choir that was scheduled to accompany the Greek star. The audience joined the choir in singing a patriotic Turkish anthem, showcasing unity and national pride in the face of the unfolding events.
