Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis emphasized the importance of Europe taking the lead on Ukraine's security guarantees in a recent interview. Gerapetritis, who met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio during his visit to the U.S., highlighted the need to prioritize ending hostilities in Ukraine as a crucial first step.
Gerapetritis stressed the significance of post-conflict considerations, including reconstruction efforts and security guarantees. He underscored the responsibility of European nations, particularly emphasizing the need for backing from the United States while asserting that Europe should play a primary role in ensuring Ukraine's security.
Amid tensions between the U.S. and Europe regarding Ukraine's defense, Gerapetritis discussed Greece's increased defense spending, surpassing NATO's target. He also addressed concerns about Greek-owned oil tankers facilitating Russia's oil trade, stating that Greece is collaborating with the EU to address the issue through strict monitoring and sanctions.

Gerapetritis aimed to strengthen transatlantic relations during his visit, emphasizing the importance of unity in addressing global crises. Discussions with Rubio also touched on security issues, including countering China's influence and collaborating with India to establish new transport corridors.
In Syria, Gerapetritis expressed caution regarding the new government, Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham, advocating for a gradual lifting of sanctions with the ability to reinstate them if necessary. He also highlighted concerns about Iran's activities in the region, particularly emphasizing the threat to maritime security posed by groups like the Houthis.
