'Greedy' mum wants kid to have adult meal at wedding because of his staggering height

At what age does a child qualify for adult meals?

It's literally a question for the ages - and one mum is claiming her boy should be allowed to order off the big boy menu at a family wedding.

The woman is due to fly out to the nuptials later this year, but has been told her 14-year-old son won't be allowed to have an adult meal.

She took to popular parenting forum Mumsnet to ask for help regarding the situation - and got a mixed bag of responses, as reported by Edinbrugh Live.

Some people have claimed she is 'being greedy', while others are backing her and believe her growing lad should be allowed a bigger portion.

She wrote: "Due to fly to a family wedding later this year. We have been asked for meal choices, all fine so far. However my 14 year old has been asked to chose from the children’s menu. The child is 6 foot tall and eats more than your average adult.

"WWYD (What Would You Do), the wedding is remote and there is nowhere else to eat. We fly in late the night before and will have been travelling for hours and it’s an early in the day wedding so no scope to pack food.

"Due to the way the wedding packages work and alcohol being included for adults then apparently an adult meal is not an option."

Her post has received dozens of replies, but no one can agree on whether she is in the right or not.

One person pointed out that the alcohol argument doesn't hold up because they could simply switch the boozy beverage for a soft drink.

And presumably not all the adults at the wedding would be drinking booze - with a pregnant woman not expected to have a children's meal.

"Just politely reply that you are happy to pay for an adult meal minus the alcohol and with fruit juice instead," they said.

Another person suggested they could offer to pay for the upgrade, saying: "I would ring Bride and Groom and ask for adult meal and offer to pay extra. Explain he is 6 foot and always hungry."

Other Mumsnet users felt it was completely reasonable to expect a teenage boy to have access to an adult meal rather than a child-size portion.

"Kids meals are usually for under tens. Are you sure it's a small portion? Sounds a bit odd," said one commenter.

Another agreed: "14 years old is too old to be offered a childrens' menu. Maybe the hosts are not aware that it's not enough food? I would ask for an adult meal. I wouldn't expect people to go to my wedding, particularly abroad, and not provide a reasonable meal."

"If they were going out for a family meal I'm guessing the 14 year old wouldn't eat from the children's menu so why should he have to at the wedding," argued a fourth.

However, there were some people that believed that the woman was the one being out of order - and stated the lad would survive.

"He's not an adult, you're being greedy," said one person, while another added: "You can pack some flapjacks in your suitcase surely? He’s not going to starve. Pack a bag of crisps, flapjack and a protein bar and then give him those before the wedding.

"Or eat them yourself and give him your adults meal and you have the kids one. Come on, this is not a huge issue."

There was also the suggestion that she could bring snacks in for the hungry lad to tuck into.

One person suggested: "My son at 14 ate more than he now eats as an adult so I understand your issue. Could you take snacks with you?"

Another agreed in a slightly blunter way, writing: "It's one meal - share starters, etc, take snacks, he will survive."
