Barry Ferguson is excited by the prospect of Rangers pairing Antonio Colak and Alfredo Morelos together in attack and has urged Gio van Bronckhorst to unleash both on Liverpool.
The Ibrox boss admitted that he believes that the Croat and the Colombian CAN play together in the same team. The Dutchman has made a 180 on his position regarding the two strikers, having insisted in August that he didn’t think playing both up top together would be beneficial given how the Gers like to play.
But now the prospect of the two frontmen linking up is a possibility. The Light Blues host St Mirren tomorrow in Govan as they return to Premiership duty. Ferguson doesn't necessarily think he’ll go for it against the Buddies so as not to tip Jurgen Klopp and his coaching staff the wink ahead of their visit to Govan in the Champions League next Wednesday.
But he’d like to see both on the park against the Reds at Ibrox. Morelos was replaced by Colak at Anfield last Tuesday but a double pronged attack would be Ferguson’s preference.
“That excites me,” he told Go Radio. “Whether it’s a two or with Morelos just paying off him. But that tells me it's obviously in his thinking.
“Whether it’s for tomorrow’s game against St Mirren or next week against Liverpool. I do still think they’ll go with the five at the back, maybe 10 yards higher up the park with the wing backs pushed up the pitch. Then you’ve got Colak and Morelos with a physical presence. They need to try and get something out of the Liverpool game and Rangers fans will be excited listening to that.
“He might try it tomorrow but then Liverpool will be looking and thinking that's the way they’re going to play against us. Maybe he;s thinking he'll leave it until next Wednesday and work on it Monday and Tuesday leading up to that game. But it’s interesting comments and he's thinking out the box. Morelos, I need him in the team because of his physical presence. He can harass defenders.
“Colak; penalty box striker, so don’t be surprised if you see it next Wednesday night against Liverpool. You've got to think different, it's worth a shout, I think those two as a double act could cause teams problems."
Meanwhile, Ferguson echoed van Bronckhorst's demands of more from Ryan Kent. The winger set up Colak and scored Rangers’ fourth against Hearts, but had little impact against his former club midweek.
And Ferguson admits he’s “greedy” when it comes to Kent. And he reckons that Gers fans will want to see more from the man who’s out of contract next summer.
He added: “Ryan Kent's a player that I think a lot of . He’s got a lot of ability but I need to see it on a more consistent basis, in terms of scoring goals and creating goals. He did it last week against Hearts at Tynecastle. A great ball in for Colak and obviously he scored the fourth goal. But I need to see that more.
“The manager’s right to ask for more. If you ask a lot of Rangers supporters, they would want more. I’ve said it for a number of weeks now - I’ve been greedy about it. He’s a player I rate highly but I need to see it week in, week out.”
