Greece manager labels Scotland 'at a higher level' ahead of crucial play-off

Greece manager Ivan Jovanovic has dubbed Scotland 'at a higher level' than his side ahead of tomorrow's UEFA Nations League A play-off first leg.

Steve Clarke has taken his side to Piraeus as the national team looks to maintain their status at the top tier.

While Greece have won six of their last seven matches, including an impressive 2-1 victory over England at Wembley, Jovanovic has played down the level of his players: "For years now, Scotland is a team which has been at a higher level than Greece," he said.

"They’ve recently played at the Euros and also in League A - which we’re now trying to get into. They’ve played against top teams like Portugal, Poland and Croatia.

"But in the last few years, the Greece team has made positive steps from the third league - to now trying to get into the first. And our group of young players are now looking to go and play at a higher level.

"There isn’t too much difference now between the level of the players. But Scotland has a lot more experience of playing at a high level, like being at the Euros in the summer. Also, their players domestically play consistently at a higher standard.

"They’re more used to playing at that level than Greece players at the moment. And Scotland has a lot of quality players, specifically in the attacking midfield area.

"They’re a team who can be very compact but they can also alter the way they play depending on the opposition they’re facing. But every game we’ve played at a high level recently, like against England and Ireland, will help us."

Scotland will become rather familiar with Greece this year. Indeed, tomorrow's meeting is the first of four between the nations in 2025 alone, with Jovanovic's side also part of the Scots' 2026 World Cup qualifying group.

Kick-off at the Stadio Georgios Karaiskaki tomorrow is at 7.45pm, before the Greeks travel to Hampden for the return leg on Sunday.
