Greater Manchester teen arrested after dramatic high-speed chase from Liverpool in 'stolen car'

A teenager has been arrested after allegedly leading cops on a high-speed chase from Liverpool to Tyldesley in a stolen car. Police were told about a blue Renault Captur being driven into Liverpool at speed along the East Lancashire Road at around 8.15pm yesterday (April 24).

Merseyside Police says the Renault, which had been stolen from Greater Manchester, failed to stop as patrols began to chase it, and it started to head away from Liverpool. It continued to travel at speed across Merseyside and into Wigan borough, before eventually being brought to a halt in Tyldesley.

The driver of the car, an 18-year-old man from Leigh, tried to make off in the Lancaster Avenue area. But with the assistance of the National Police Air Helicopter Service (NPAS) and the Dogs Section, he was detained by police.

The teenager was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, aggravated taking without consent, failing to stop, driving otherwise than in accordance with a driving licence and driving without third party insurance. He was taken into custody for questioning by police.

Insp Carl McNulty, of Merseyside Police's Matrix Roads Policing Unit, said: "This was a fantastic team effort to remove a vehicle travelling at excess speed across Merseyside into Manchester. Such driving causes massive risk to other road users and pedestrians so if you have any information about suspected vehicle crime other dangerous behaviour, contact us and we will take action."

Eyewitnesses in the Tyldesley area reported seeing a huge police presence descend on Sunday night, with around 10 police vehicles reportedly seen as well as a police helicopter. The vehicles were also seen travelling at pace along the East Lancs Road.
