Temperatures have soared to new heights again in Greater Manchester as the region saw its record high temperature broken for the second day running. Official Met Office records had only just been smashed yesterday (July 18), when the two nearest weather stations to Manchester recorded their highest temperatures to date.
The Met Office's weather station in Rochdale saw a maximum temperature of 34.5C yesterday, while in Rostherne - between Knutsford and Altrincham - the mercury hit 35.1C. Now, in provisional figures, the Met Office says those records have been broken - less than 24 hours after they were set.
The Rochdale weather station saw a top temperature today (Tuesday) of 37.2C, while in Rostherne the temperature hit 37.7C. Meanwhile, the The University of Manchester recorded temperatures of more than 36C at its Whitworth Observatory near the city centre this afternoon (July 19).
Before this week, Greater Manchester's record temperature stood at 33.9C, recorded at the Met Office's Rochdale weather station on July 25, 2019. Official temperatures didn't quite hit the heights of 38C, which had been forecasted for Manchester earlier today.
But other parts of the country have seen even hotter temperatures, with Coningsby in Lincolnshire recording the UK's new record temperature of 40.3C. London has also seen temperatures exceeding 40C in some areas, while the capital's fire brigade declared a major incident as huge fires broke out, including a dramatic blaze in Wennington.
Train lines have also been brought to a halt, with Manchester services from London Euston affected due to a fire close to the line at Harrow, and services at Birmingham New Street have been grounded. Some Metrolink services in Greater Manchester have also been suspended due to the weather.
