Greater Manchester's covid cases fall across all boroughs as region hits grim milestone

There have been more than 900,000 coronavirus cases in Greater Manchester since the start of the pandemic, latest figures reveal.

A total of 902,643 coronavirus cases have been confirmed in the region. There have been 8,777 deaths.

The figures come as infection rates continue to plummet in all 10 boroughs. In Greater Manchester as a whole, the infection rate is now 176.3 cases per 100,000 people, according to the latest data from the UK Health Security Agency.

The national average is 293.6 cases per 100,000 people. A total of 4,998 people tested positive for coronavirus across Greater Manchester in the week which ended on February 28.

That's down by 1,465 cases compared to the previous week, which means the infection rate fell 23 per cent. Stockport continues to have the highest coronavirus infection rate in Greater Manchester with 226.4 cases per 100,000 people. Oldham, where the rate is 141.0 cases per 100,000 people, has the lowest.

Hospital admissions

In the week ending on February 27, a total of 308 patients were admitted to Greater Manchester NHS hospitals with Covid-19. That is 10 fewer than the week before, a fall of three per cent.

On Tuesday, March 1, there were 14 Mechanical Ventilation (MV) beds occupied by Covid patients in Greater Manchester NHS hospitals. That is 10 fewer than a week earlier.

This is the most recent available data for hospital admissions, the figures for NHS trusts are not updated daily.

Deaths

In the week ending February 28, a total of 31 people died within 28 days of a positive Covid test across Greater Manchester, which is seven fewer than the week before.

Cases reported in each of the 10 boroughs

There was a fall of 39 per cent in cases in Tameside over the week ending February 28, and the infection rate is now 148.8 cases per 100,000 people. Tameside recorded 338 positive Covid-19 tests over the seven-day period, and that is 216 fewer than the previous week.

In Bury the latest infection rate is 203.5 cases per 100,000 people and the number of cases has gone down by 11 per cent. A total of 388 people tested positive for Covid in Bury over the seven days ending on February 28, which is 49 fewer than the week before.

Oldham recorded 335 positive Covid-19 tests in the week ending February 28, which is 33 fewer than the previous seven days. The coronavirus infection rate in Oldham is now 141.0 cases per 100,000 people and is down by nine per cent week-on-week.

In Stockport there were 666 positive Covid-19 tests in the week ending February 28, which is 188 fewer than the previous week. The infection rate in Stockport is down slightly compared with the previous day and the week-on-week trend is down by 22 per cent.

In Bolton the latest infection rate is 147.1 cases per 100,000 people. There were 424 cases recorded in Bolton, which is 117 fewer than the previous week - a fall of 22 per cent.

There were 1,005 positive Covid-19 tests in Manchester in the week ending February 28, which is 340 fewer than the previous seven days. That is down by 25 per cent compared to the previous week. The latest infection rate in Manchester is 180.8 cases per 100,000 people.

Salford recorded 497 coronavirus cases, which is 184 fewer than in the previous seven days. The latest infection rate in Salford is 189.2 cases per 100,000 people which is down 27 per cent week-on-week.

Wigan saw a total of 502 cases in the week ending February 28, which is 163 fewer than the previous week. That is a fall of 25 per cent. In Wigan, the most recent coronavirus infection rate is now 151.8 cases per 100,000 people.

In Rochdale the number of cases is down by 16 per cent compared to the previous week - leaving the infection rate at 148.4 cases per 100,000 population. There were 332 positive Covid-19 tests in Rochdale in the week ending February 28, which was 61 fewer than the previous seven days.

There were 511 positive tests over the last week in Trafford , which is 114 fewer than in the previous week. The week-on-week trend in Trafford is down by 18 per cent and the latest infection rate is 215.1 cases per 100,000 people.
