Greater Manchester Police Chief Inspector Nicholas Hill has issued a statement to further elaborate upon Manchester United's postponed game with Leeds United. The Whites had been penned in to face Erik ten Hag's side at Old Trafford this weekend, however due to police shortages ahead of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's funeral, the game has been postponed.
Football across the country stood still last weekend as a mark of respect for Her Majesty and the Premier League had been scheduled to return this weekend. Jesse Marsch's side will now have to fit in both the upcoming cancellation against Manchester United and last weekend's clash with Nottingham Forest into an already hectic diary.
Chief Inspector Nicholas Hill, of GMP’s Specialist Operations Planning Unit, said: “Greater Manchester Police is supporting forces across the United Kingdom in keeping people safe at locations and events of high-significance following the passing of Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. We have plans in place to ensure we can provide this support whilst effectively serving our own communities.
“We are also working with partner agencies to consider the viability of un-related but exceptionally large events in Greater Manchester. This includes the Manchester United vs. Leeds fixture, which has been postponed with the support of the Safety Advisory Group and the club.”
