An award-winning seafood restaurant with stunning views of the River Ayr has closed its doors.
Owners of The Waterfront restaurant, located near Ayr harbour, have said they have made the difficult decision to close, citing hardships over the ‘past couple years’.
The South Harbour Street eatery, owned by Ally and John Kerr of Troon, was a popular spot for fish dishes- including mussels, whole roasted seabass and beer battered fish and chips- with customers enjoying meals with spectacular views across the River Ayr towards Arran.
Their outside terrace was a prime spot for a chilled beverage on a hot summers day, and even welcomed pooches along to soak up the sun outside and in their bar area.
The restaurant was crowned top ‘Gastro Pub of the Year’ in the Food Awards Scotland 2017, and scooped the winning spot in the Ayrshire Retail Business Awards 2017 for ‘Best Licensed Premises’.
It’s understood the couple’s other restaurant, The Auchans, in Dundonald, will remain open.
A post on The Waterfront’s Facebook read: “It is with great sadness we have decided after 10 years to close The Waterfront.
“The past couple years have been hard on everyone, especially hospitality and we decided, not easily, that we would close.
“This has not been an easy decision and would like to thank our staff, past and present, that have worked hard here over the years.
“We would also like to say thanks to customers and suppliers, who have also supported us.”
Customers were sad to hear of the closure, sharing tales of memories made while dining there.
Anne Pratchett said: “So sorry to hear that. We have had some lovely meals on special occasions and I am sad that we won’t have any more.
“Lovely memories of good food and friendly staff. I wish you well.”
John Bleasdale added: “Cannot believe this news.
“This place is so special to us. Not only is it the best restaurant in Scotland but it’s also where I proposed to my wife.
“Gutted this decision has had to be made.”
Pam Mccolm commented: “Sorry to hear. You have brightened that part of town for many years. Thank you and good luck.”
