Great Hope White: Super Netball prodigy tipped to star

Hope White walked into the Giants' pre-season camp a terrified 18-year-old, now coach Julie Fitzgerald sees her becoming one of the next household names.

Super Netball's youngest player is tipped to be an integral part of the Giants' midfield, who begin their 2025 campaign against the Queensland Firebirds at home on Sunday afternoon.

White adds her lightning fast hands and quick feet to a side led by Maddie Hay and Diamond Jamie-Lee Price.

"In years to come you'll see a lot of her," Fitzgerald said.

"When she first came into the team, she was a bit terrified of me and she hardly spoke. But now she's a real character.

"She brings a real personality into the team, and is also a really big talent for the sport."

The midcourter featured in Australia's under-21 side at the age of 17 after becoming the grand final MVP at last year's under-19 national championships.

White plays into the Giants' 2025 memo of re-direction after the side finished last on the ladder with three wins in 2024.

They begin their campaign against an under-the-spotlight Firebirds after Netball Australia found there was no substantial evidence of Remi Kamo's claim that her former team fostered a "toxic" environment.

All eyes will be on the Firebirds' star goal shooting recruit Mary Cholhok, who stands 201 centimetres tall and is a four-time winner of the top goal-scorer award in England's Super League.

"(Against the Firebirds) obviously Mary is an enormous target. She's made a great difference to their side," Fitzgerald said.

"They're going to be a very formidable opponent.

"(But) we have more depth across the court in all three areas that we've than we've ever had before.

"We know exactly where we fell short last year. It's not all going to happen at once, but I we know the direction we're headed."
