People have had their say on the news of a former Liverpool and Everton midfielder going for a meal and ending up buying the entire restaurant.
Steve McMahon revealed how he ended up owning Auberge Brasserie, a small French restaurant in Southport town centre, after he went for a quiet meal with his wife Julie in October 2020. The 60-year-old, who only moved back to Merseyside three years ago after living in Asia, said he got chatting to the owner at the time who the couple knew and found out he was looking to get rid so he could retire.
Steve told the ECHO : "One night we decided to go for some food so went to a restaurant we always went to which is Auberge and we found out that the owner who we know was wanting to retire.

"We liked it. We only went for a meal and bought a restaurant. It was definitely an impulsive buy but I'm glad we did it. It keeps us busy. You don't want to retire and do nothing."
Following the story published by the ECHO yesterday, people have given their thoughts on the "impulsive" purchase. Linda Clarke said: "It's a lovely restaurant with fantastic food, had a couple of meals here and met Steve on one visit, he was very welcoming."
Some readers wished the ex-Blackpool manager luck with his venture that has seen his wife take the reigns with the day-to-day running. Roy Jones said "Great player for Liverpool in his day good luck Steve."
One reader recognised Julie rather than the former footballer. Den09 commented: "Gorgeous Julie I used to work with her such a lovely girl good luck to you both."
