The Great British Bake Off returned on Sunday night (April 16) with another special episode on Channel 4 in aid of Stand Up To Cancer. Deborah Meaden, Jay Blades, Judi Love and Mike Wozniak entered the tent for the Great Celebrity Bake Off, putting their kitchen skills to the test in a series of challenges.
The celebrities were tasked with making cheesecakes and a vegan version of a barbecue classic before recreating their first celebrity crush in the showstopper. But the charity element meant there was a serious message too - as viewers discovered.
During the show a heartbreaking video clip was broadcast telling the story of Brett, a dad who died from a brain tumour in 2019. He had undergone an initial operation for the grade 4 glioblastoma, but it continued to grow to the point where it could not be operated on.
In the clip, Brett's widow Nicola explained that when her husband died she had only given birth to their third child, a daughter, a little over three hours earlier. She said she managed to make it to Brett's bedside, adding: "I said to him it's OK, don't hurt yourself anymore - you know, putting himself through the pain."
Commenting on Twitter, viewers said they found the clip an emotional watch. Louise O @ALouiseKelly said: "That’s got to be one of the most poignant and heartbreaking #standuptocancer stories I’ve ever seen on #GBBO."
Paul James Wood @pjwood26 said: "Brett’s story on SUTC Bake Off absolutely done me in there. What a cruel world and horrific disease."
Alice R @Alice_robinson7 tweeted: "I’m in bits. This is why it’s so important to keep on donating - brave brave lady for sharing her story."
Andrea Davies @andread48070873 said: "That was so heartbreaking, RIP Brett."
And Deborah Meaden herself commented, posting: "Well blimey… and now the reason why we all took part in #GBBO. Cancer is a terrible thing so very happy to #StandUpToCancer."
