Great British Menu: Edinburgh chef's dish slammed by viewers as 'not on brief'

Edinburgh chef Stuart Ralston's main course on Great British Menu was criticised by some viewers who felt it was not on brief.

Ralston, along with fellow chefs Adam Handling and Calum Montgomery, was tasked with creating main courses and desserts celebrating British broadcasting.

The Edinburgh chef, who owns renowned restaurant Aizle on Charlotte Square, decided to prepare a main inspired by the iconic fantasy series Game of Thrones.

The dish, titled Game of the Forest, featured venison loin and skewers of liver alongside a goblet of bullshot — a cocktail containing vodka and beef broth.

It received a score of 9 from judge Richard Corrigan — while both of the other mains received a 7 — who called it "bang on brief" but some viewers at home weren't so convinced.

Taking to Twitter, one wrote: "Game of Thrones ? This wasn’t on the BBC."

A second agreed: "Not sure why the chef has used Game of Thrones as his inspiration when it wasn't broadcast on the BBC? Fully connecting to the brief... not sure about that..."

"Game of Thrones was not on BBC," said a third.

Others argued that the brief was actually to create a dish inspired by any British show, not just one broadcast on BBC.

However, some Twitter users clapped back by stating that Game of Thrones is in fact an American production rather than a British one.

In response to a user defending the dish, one commented: "Game of Thrones wasn't British".

A second echoed: "Agreed, it’s definitely not just the BBC, but it is supposed to be British. Game of Thrones is American."

"Quite. It’s American. HBO. So not “bang on brief” at all," said another.

A fourth agreed: "It is British Broadcasting and GoT is American so I was confused by that".
