Bake Off viewers were left baffled by Prue Leith's criticism for Sandro's spooky skull cake on the show's Halloween week. The bakers' signature challenge was to make an "exquisitely decorated apple cake" with a "hero ingredient" of fresh apple.
Fan favourite Sandro chose to make a "Creepy apple crumble cake", with a spiced Bramley apple sponge and cinnamon whisky tranfusion. However Prue was sceptical about his decision to top it with a crystal sugar skull.
She told him: "I know it's Halloween but I really think that skull ruins your cake. It's such a beautiful shape and you plonk a great big skull on top." However she told him his sponge was "lovely and moist" - although Paul criticised the flavour, saying: "For me it's not apple-y enough."
Viewers on Twitter were incredulous at Prue's criticism when Sandro had stayed true to the theme of the week. @nickw84 said: "BAKE OFF: IT'S HALLOWEEN WEEK. PRUE: Can we get rid of the skull? Not keen." EdwardJacksn wrote: "Bake off - We want a Halloween cake *Skull cake* Prue - No not like that."
@writertasha25 said: "The skull has ruined it." It's Halloween, Prue!", while @RandomJot said: "Wrong! Skulls always improve things, get with the program Prue."
This week's technical challenge saw the bakers asked to make eight s'mores in two hours, followed by a Halloween showstopper.
Syabira was named Star Baker and was the happy recipient of a Hollywood handshake, joking: "I haven't washed it since then. It's like Paul power. I was surprised."
Dawn was the latest baker chosen to leave the tent. She said: "I really don't want to shed tears over it because it's just been the most amazing experience, one of the absolute best experiences of my life. I'm really, really proud of what I've done and I've had fun, such fun."
