Great British Bake Off's Tom is first to leave show and admits cake was 'disaster'

Hopeful Tom hit the earth with a bump when he became first to leave the Great British Bake Off tent for his “anti-gravity” cake.

He admitted his showstopper had been a “disaster” but his departure will spark controversy among fans.

Judge Prue Leith deemed his signature swiss rolls to be “not at all bad” and he came fifth out of 12 in the technical for a well-baked malt loaf.

In contrast, detective Amanda came last in the technical and was told that her “surf explosion” cake – which collapsed after Paul Hollywood cut it – did not fulfil the criteria, as the cake was at the bottom not the top.

George thought he was out after his mini rolls were described as “pudding not cake” while vegan baker Freya, 19, admitted that not using eggs is “a bit of a faff”.

Tom, 28, ran out of time during his concert hall showstopper, which was flawed from the outset for not actually defying gravity.

Tonight the software engineer from Kent admitted he felt disappointed to leave so early, saying: “It didn’t go to plan at all. But I am definitely proud of myself.

“My showstopper was a bit of a disaster. The judges said that for an anti-gravity cake it didn’t defy the laws of gravity.

“I know it’s hard to go out first and it was short and sweet, but it was an experience that I won’t forget.

“I am shy so can’t quite believe I have been on national TV.”
