Matt Lucas has dramatically quit the Great British Bake Off saying in a statement that it's become clear he can no longer host. He added that after three series and 51 episodes he was "cheerfully passing the baguette on to someone else".
In the lengthy farewell, posted to his 1.2million followers on Twitter, the former Little Britain star said: "Farewell Bake Off! It's been a delicious experience and I can't imagine a more fun way of spending my summers.
"But it's become clear to me that I can't present both Fantasy Football League and Bake Off alongside all my other projects. So, after three series and 51 episodes, I am cheerfully passing the baguette on to someone else.
"I would like to give my warmest thanks and gratitude to everyone at Love Productions and Channel 4 and to Noelipops, Paul, Dame Prue, the crew and, of course, the wonderful bakers for welcoming me into the tent. I wish whoever takes over the very best and I can't wait to tune into the next series without already knowing who won!"
Many of his fans and viewers of the hit Channel 4 programme have been left devastated at the news. One person said: "Thanks for the memories! (Being a part of them)"
Another added: "Nooooooo! But fair enough. Pleased for you that you’re so busy but it was great having you on Bake Off. All the best for your future projects and put in a good word for me with Paul. Now to see Saka with the World Cup and Odegaard with the Premier League trophy!"
A third tweeted: "You’ll be missed, Matt. I loved your rapport with Noel and the plentiful laughs each episode."
While a fourth replied: "Oh what a great shame. Loved you on this but it’s your decision & we have to respect that! Looking forward to seeing or reading what’s next for you. Lots of love & best always xxx"
