Great British Bake Off fans gutted as two bakers leave the show during Mexican Week

James and Rebs became the latest contestants to leave The Great British Bake Off this evening, in a brutal double elimination.

Fans took to social media as it was confirmed the two bakers wouldn't be returning for next week's episode, with one sadly tweeting: "Gotta say, seeing poor Rebs just go to pieces then did heart punch me a bit #GBBO."

Tonight's episode of The Great British Bake Off saw Rebecca and Abdul return to the iconic tent, after missing out on bread week due to illness. Revealing the pair would get a pass at the time, host Matt Lucas told the other bakers: "Both Rebs and Abdul are a bit under the weather this week, but with your permission, we thought we’d send them both straight through to the final."

Noel Fielding clarified his co-host wasn't being serious, adding: "Only joking, they’re going to miss a week and hopefully they’ll be back next week."

Episode four of the popular Channel 4 show saw the hopeful bakers attempt to impress judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith with a set of exciting Mexican-themed bakes - something Paul was particularly looking forward to ahead of filming.

"Mexican week was one of my favourites because the challenges are spectacular," the star explained to Best magazine ahead of the episode airing this evening [October 4].

"What they created was very, very good – on a par with what I had in Mexico only a couple of weeks before making Paul Hollywood Eats Mexico."

The episode - which was 15 minutes longer than usual - kicked off with signature challenge seeing the bakers having to use yeasted variety to whip up 12 identical tasty buns and present pan dulce to the judges to taste-test.

Kevin impressed the judges and even almost got one of Paul's coveted handshakes.

It was then time for the technical challenge of producing eight Mexican tacos, with Paul advising the bakers to be careful not to overfill their tacos before baking commenced and Maxy was eventually announced as the winner of the challenge.

Things got tricky when the dreaded showstopper challenge was revealed as the tres leches cake - a sponge cak soaked in three kinds of milk: evaporated milk, condensed milk, and whole milk.

*The Great British Bake Off continues on Tuesday 11 October at 8pm on Channel 4
