Great British Bake Off contestant told Johnny Depp fib to cover for filming

It is week five of the latest series of Channel 4's The Great British Bake Off and five bakers have already rolled up their aprons and headed home. However, the latest contestant to be eliminated from the show carried with her a secret that she spilled the beans on as she left the contest.

Fan-favourite Carole, a 59-year-old supermarket cashier, pulled off her oven gloves this week and headed home to Dorset after struggling with 'Dessert Week'. She had managed to avoid being dumped from the show so far, despite having spent the last three weeks at the bottom of the judges' list. But week five was her swan song and she was axed from the show.

According to Nottinghamshire Live's sister website, Birmingham Live, Carole failed to impress with her signature bake and the technical challenge. While she appeared to redeem herself during the showstopper challenge, judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith admitted that she hadn't done enough to keep her place in the competition.

As she left, Carole revealed a big lie - and it was one that she had told her family and friends. Covering up the reason for her absence and home and work as she committed herself to filming, she had told those closest to her an elaborate fib. She admitted: "I told my work colleagues I was on Jury service … then I changed it to say I was on the Johnny Depp trial!"

The star-studded excuse for her absence was designed to keep Carole’s participation in the show a secret. This covertness is a requirement for all budding hopefuls. on the Channel 4 show.

Speaking about her exit, Carole said: "It’s my time to go. I am very proud of myself I came here to achieve something as I get older." Adding: "Even to get through and walk through the tent - that is an achievement in itself. And those bakers - what a great bunch of people!”

Carole went on: "I always felt each week was going to be my last, but I knew on Dessert Week my time was up. I didn’t dream in a million years that I would get to the halfway mark, so in my mind, it’s a celebration rather than a downer. I always like to look on the bright side, it’s in my nature, and you have to remind yourself it’s only pudding rather than just desserts!"
