Grayson Perry receives knighthood at Windsor Castle in striking 'grandmother of the bride' burgundy dress

Renowned artist and broadcaster Sir Grayson Perry, known for his tapestries, ceramic works, and distinctive cross-dressing, has accepted his knighthood from Prince William at Windsor Castle. The 63-year-old Turner Prize-winning artist was recognized in the New Year Honours list for his outstanding contributions to the arts.

In a nod to the occasion, Sir Grayson wore a burgundy taffeta dress of his own design to receive the honour this week. This was not his first foray into statement attire during investiture ceremonies. Back in 2014, he wore what he affectionately called his "Italian mother-of-the-bride" outfit—an elegant midnight blue dress paired with a wide-brimmed black hat—when he received his CBE from Prince Charles.

Sir Grayson said: "The last outfit was 'mother-of-the-bride', so maybe I'm now 'grandmother-of-the-bride'—I've got a bit older." Drawing inspiration from the Stuart era, particularly the 17th-century portraits of women, he designed the dress with big sleeves and a dropped shoulder, working alongside a dressmaker and a hatmaker.

When asked about the impact of his knighthood, Sir Grayson humorously remarked, "Obviously now I could get into real trouble if I did something naughty... At the lower end, speeding. At the upper end, well, we won't go there! I haven't got any dirty secrets. I've led with my secrets all my life, and they're all dirty!" He planned to keep the honor in his "cupboard of medals," jokingly noting, "I'm very good at winning things."

When asked about his informal use of the title, he explained that he prefers not to come across as "pompous" and believes it should be used during "very formal occasions." Playfully, he added, "But it's quite funny to sign off a text to your best friend, 'Sir G.'"

During the investiture ceremony, Sir Grayson engaged in a conversation with Prince William, which he described as "fun." They discussed the importance of humor in culture, with Sir Grayson emphasizing its role as a check and balance. He stated, "Humor is the check and balance of culture, there's no common sense without a sense of humor."

Reflecting on his journey as an artist, Sir Grayson highlighted the importance of perseverance, particularly for young artists. He shared, "It's a long haul... Never stop learning. It's absolutely important to always try new things that excite you." He encouraged the pursuit of new ideas and experiences as integral to artistic growth.

Comparing his recent investiture experience with the previous one, Sir Grayson found the ceremony to be more intimate and meaningful. He stated, "The whole reason for a ritual is to orchestrate emotion... I suppose the emotion you're trying to do here is pride."

Hailing from Chelmsford, Essex, Sir Grayson has become a prominent figure in the art world and beyond, with his talents in tapestry, ceramics, and playful and provocative use of cross-dressing earning him international recognition.

The 63-year-old artist, known for his captivating artworks and thought-provoking social commentary, has made appearances on several television shows., including Question Time, The Culture Show, and Have I Got News for You.
