Granit Xhaka sends message to Arsenal fans after 'captain's performance'

Granit Xhaka has sent a personal message to Arsenal supporters following praise for his midfield display against Brentford on Sunday afternoon in West London.

The Swiss midfielder was at his best in the 3-0 win, providing a superb assist for Gabriel Jesus' goal, which was Arsenal's second of the afternoon. The usually deep lying playmaker was picking up spaces higher up the pitch than usual in an all action display from a player who has often been criticised during his time at the club.

The football.london player ratings from the match describe his display as: "A captain's performance from the leader for the day. Superb in his contribution to the attack including an assist for Jesus and ensured standard remained high in the second. Nice to hear fans chanting his name after their previously tumultuous relationship."

Those fans cheering his name will have been among those who booed the former Borussia Monchengladbach man when he was captain at the club and their resounding response today was reflective of the turnaround he has experienced under the management of Mikel Arteta.

In a video posted to Arsenal's official Twitter account, the midfielder thanked fans for their response to his performance, saying: Xhaka said: "Hey guys, Granit here. Great win, great result, thanks for your support.

"You've been amazing but as well for myself to hear what happened today, to say my name, to sing the song for me. It's a very, very special day and thank you again, see you soon. All the best guys."
