Resident in Grangemouth are being told to prepare for 12 hours of mass flaring at INEOS as the refinery starts "recommissioning work" at one of its units.
Bosses at the petrochemical plant say that there will be periods of "controlled elevated flaring" and have apologised to locals in advance.
According to a statement on the site's social media channels, it is part of the normal start-up process.
It added: "We are in the process of recommissioning one of the refinery units at the Grangemouth site.
"Over the next 12 hours there will be periods of controlled elevated flaring as we bring the unit back online.
"This is part of the normal start-up process.
"We apologies for an inconvenience this may cause our neighbours and those who work near to the site.
"We are committed to informing our local community and those who live and work nearby of our activities that may result in flaring."
