Grandpa Greene's new Saddleworth park cafe and restaurant has opened its doors

A popular ice-cream company has revealed a first glimpse of its new cafe and restaurant in Uppermill. Grandpa Greene's has opened its new space in King George V Playing Fields on Wade Row for takeaway ahead of the full launch of its cafe next Friday (June 9).

The new spot has been built in the former public toilets at the edge of the park, and will serve up ice creams, hot and cold drinks, and a range of sandwiches. Teasing the opening on social media, the luxury ice cream specialists shared a video giving a “taster of what’s to come”, before opening fully from next week.

It marks the second outpost for the luxury ice cream makers whose flagship parlour and cafe bar is nestled in the rolling green hills of Diggle. Featuring glass-fronted terraces, and indoor dining room and waterfront seating, it's a popular spot with daytrippers visiting the canal and adjacent obstacle adventure course.

Oldham’s licensing panel approved the application from Grandpa Greene’s Luxury Ice Cream for a new premises licence for a ‘small’ restaurant on the edge of a park in Uppermill, accommodating 44 people, in early May. Situated in the Saddleworth area of Oldham, the park is only small but steeped in history, housing the site of the former 17th Century abbey, and linking up to walks along the River Tame and the Huddersfield Canal.

The green light came despite some objections from residents and a parish councillor who raised concerns about the effect of serving alcohol within the King George V Playing Fields. Under the approved terms of the licence, Grandpa Greene’s will serve alcohol from 11am to 7pm, Monday to Sunday at the new venue. The company also insisted alcohol would only be served inside, and with food – such as Prosecco with afternoon tea.

In a post shared on Instagram earlier, followers are given a sneak peek of the new space, as well as menus, and beautiful surroundings. A caption accompanying the post read: "Uppermill be are ready for you. Today's the day we've all been waiting for!

"The opening of our brand new location here in Uppermill! This has been a long time coming for GG's and we could not be more excited and ready for you all to join us!

"We are open from 9a, all things ice cream, both hot and cold drinks and a range of takeaway sandwiches. Bakes will also be here from 12pm, who's coming to join us."

A close up of the menus reveals a selection of dishes on offer, from breakfast sandwiches such as bacon and sausage, to freshly baked baguettes in varieties spanning salt and pepper chicken, New York deli and la Caprese. Ice creams are available in flavours including mint choc chip, salted caramel and bubble-gum, and all are available in a variety of cones.

The owners added: "Here's a little snippet of what to expect, our team have been preparing until late hours last night and up early this morning to get ready for all of you to join us today! We hope you all like it as much as we do.

"Please we aware there is a lot of road closures today in our local village due to band contests so it will be extremely difficult to get to us if you don't live in the local area. Things will resume to normal from tomorrow, being open the whole weekend, we hope to see you all very soon."

The park is located off the High Street, Uppermill and can also be accessed via Wade Row and St. Marys Gate.
