A grandmother says she was left in an awkward position after her son proudly asked her what she thought of the name he'd chosen for his newborn baby daughter. She decided to be completely honest with him, but he didn't exactly like what she had to say.
According to this new grandma, her 27-year-old son and his wife welcomed their first child three days ago. Although the couple both wanted to keep the baby's gender a secret right up until the birth, they were convinced they were having a little boy after reading up on signs from old wives' tales.
They, therefore, settled on the name Henri, which the grandmother had no issue with at all. In fact, she thought it was a very nice name, although she encouraged them to remember that they may well still be having a girl.
Taking to Reddit, where she goes by the username u/throwaway2727828, the conflicted grandma wrote: "Well, the baby was born, and, when it turned out to be a girl, they were disappointed but happy. They hadn't decided on a name up until yesterday. They announced the name as Henriettah. Yes, that's the spelling."
When asked what she thought of the name Henriettah, the grandmother felt she had to tell the truth, admitting that she just "wasn't a fan".
She continued: "They seemed pretty angry, but I reassured them it's not my child and not my choice to make. They did ask for my opinion, and I gave it.
"I wasn't going to convince them to change it but if that's the name then that's the name and I will accept that. Still, they're pretty angry and said I could have lied to them."
After having had some time to reflect, the grandma wonders whether she should have just kept her thoughts to herself, and has reached out to fellow Reddit users for advice.
One person commented: "They specifically asked for your opinion. Them telling you you could have lied is so juvenile. If they weren't prepared for the answer, they shouldn't have asked the question."
Another remarked: "I know from experience, once you hold them and get to know them, they become their name and it will grow on you as you start to love her. Just wait!"
