Grandad who thinks he is singing to himself accidentally plays for whole street

A grandad accidentally gave an impromptu concert to his neighbours after not singing to a crowd in nearly 15 years.

Alan Meyers from Churchtown had recently bought a new PA system and decided to test it out. After setting it up in his back garden on Monday afternoon he decided to start singing.

Alan, a former club singer who played across Liverpool for nearly 20 years, was happily singing to himself in his back garden rattling through hits from John Denver to the Eagles. When he finished he heard applause coming from houses a number of streets away.

Speaking to the ECHO the 68-year-old said: "I wanted to see how loud my new PA system would go so I thought I would just try it in the garden. When I was singing people started clapping three streets away and I was getting messages from people saying how nice it was playing live music."

While Alan continued to sing for his neighbours around Bibby Road, in Southport, he got an unexpected visitor. He said: "While I was sat there playing one guy came through my back gate and told me he needed to see who was singing. I didn't know him from Adam but I kept on singing until the song was over.

"Turns out he was from a few streets away. He then asked for my telephone number so he could start putting requests in while he was back sitting in his garden."

Alan said that after losing his wife two years ago music had been a great source of comfort for him. He said: "Music has saved my life and it kept me going. Singing is a positive thing, it makes you feel good and I would recommend it to anyone."

"I always sing, I sing everywhere I go, it doesn't matter what I am doing and the reception from the neighbours has been amazing. Everyone likes a pat on the back. We have a Wattsapp group and everyone has been calling the performance 'Glastonbibby'."

After an hour and a half Alan packed up, much to the disappointment of his neighbours. But the Grandad-of-two, who hasn't played in front of a crowd in nearly 15 years, will now take to the stage again. He has invited his neighbours round to watch him play without garden fences in the way.

Alan the former electrician said: "I have invited everyone round for a little soirée so people can come and have a listen. A lot of people have replied saying that they would love it too so it should be fun."
