A man who started taking driving lessons aged 51 won a £80,000 car - two weeks later. Grandad Andrew Slocombe scooped a brand-new Jaguar - just 14 days after he started taking lessons.
Chuffed Andrew, of Newport, Wales, scooped the electric Jaguar I-PACE in the first Omaze Million Pound House Superdraw. Andrew, who works as a store manager at Marks & Spencer, is “thrilled” with his new car - despite not actually having a driving licence.
Luckily he had already begun taking lessons two weeks before his big win. Andrew has three sons, Josh, 24, Luc, 22, Ben, 19, and twin grandsons from Josh aged two.
His middle son Luc was diagnosed with an incredibly rare type of cancer just a couple of days before his 21st birthday, in April last year. There is only one case of chondroblastic osteosarcoma recorded every four years in the UK.
Teenage Cancer Trust have partnered with Omaze for their latest house draw. Andrew said he entered as he always tries to support Teenage Cancer Trust whenever he can as the charity “supported my family through such a crucial time.”
He said: ''The car is absolutely fantastic, I’ve only just started driving lessons as I lived in London from 18 to 30, so never had to learn. I started a couple of weeks ago just to prove to my sons I could pass my test!
“As lovely as the car is - I will probably sell it and buy a clapped-out old banger to get around in. The money I’ll get from selling it will pay off my mortgage and help pay for Luc’s upcoming wedding.
''I’ll also give my other two boys some cash to help them during the cost-of-living crisis. It’s a life-changing win for the whole family.
''I entered the day after my father had passed away, I was outside the hospital and saw it on my phone and thought, why not enter as it's for Teenage Cancer Trust, I never gave the possibility of winning a second thought.''
As of two weeks ago, Luc’s consultants were happy to report no signs of the cancer returning. The only car in the family at the moment is a 20-year-old Vauxhall Astra driven by Luc, that used to belong to Andrew’s late father.
Andrew said: '“The last thing I can remember winning was a soap dispenser when I called up a radio station to answer questions about EastEnders when I was 18, so this win wipes the floor with that!''
