If you’ve been eagerly waiting for a brand new Grand Theft Auto, well this might just be your year.
The highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6 release date has been teased for almost a decade at this stage. When the first trailer was announced in 2023, gamers were frothing at the mouth for a fresh GTA experience.
Developer Rockstar Games has been fairly tight-lipped about the game, and we can’t blame them. This is one of the most anticipated games of all time given that the previous Grand Theft Auto 5, released in 2013, has so far sold more than 210 million copies and made more than US $8.5 billion in revenue. It’s one of the most successful entertainment releases (including films) of all time. So you can definitely expect your co-workers to conveniently pull a sickie or take leave for a bit when the sequel drops.
Rockstar has given some hints here and there on when we can expect the game to finally drop. So let’s dive into them now, shall we?
When is Grand Theft Auto 6 confirmed to come out?
We got our first confirmation that Grand Theft Auto 6 would be released in 2025 at the end of its official trailer, which dropped back in December 2023.
So far, Rockstar Games has stayed firm that the game will be released sometime in fall 2025 (anywhere from September to November here in Australia).
Just this week, Take-Two (Rockstar Games’ parent company) held an investor meeting and confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 was still on track to be released by said deadline.
If that doesn’t fill you with confidence, IGN also chatted with Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnik, who said that while “there’s always a risk of slippage,” the company still felt “really good about[fall 2025].”
Zelnik went on to say: “We know that Rockstar seeks perfection. I never claim success before it occurs. I’m fond of saying arrogance is the enemy of continued success, so we’re all running scared and looking over our shoulders and we know that the competition is not asleep. Our whole organization is super excited.”
As you can imagine, Grand Theft Auto 6 is the most anticipated game of the year and it’s made studios very nervous about announcing release dates for their own titles. Even EA CEO Andrew Wilson said he was willing to delay the new Battlefield if it meant they didn’t have to compete with Grand Theft Auto 6.
While there isn’t any reason to believe the game will be delayed this year, it’s probably for the best you don’t get too attached to that release deadline — just for your own sake.
What will happen in Grand Theft Auto 6?

Now, with all this hubbub, what do we know so far about the game? Unfortunately, not much outside of what was revealed in the first trailer.
The official trailer introduced us to Grand Theft Auto 6’s protagonists and location. The game has been confirmed to let you switch between its two lead characters Lucia, another male protagonist whose name hasn’t been revealed just yet. The game is rumoured to have a Bonnie-Clyde dynamic between the two, which would make a lot of sense for the series.
We also saw that the game is returning to Vice City. You know, from that Grand Theft Auto game we all played on our school laptops instead of paying attention in class?
So what do we actually know about GTA 6?
We know we’re returning to Vice City, the Miami-inspired setting for the fourth Grand Theft Auto (2002). That information was revealed in the 2023 trailer, as was the news that you’ll be able to switch between playing two lead characters: Lucia, and an as-yet unnamed male protagonist. The game is rumoured to have a Bonnie-Clyde dynamic between the two, which would make a lot of sense for the series.
There have been some rumours that the map for this game will be even larger than that of Grand Theft Auto 5‘s also, so get ready to spend many a day taking road trips in the game.
What consoles can play Grand Theft Auto 6?

As of writing, Rockstar hasn’t officially confirmed if Grand Theft Auto 6 will be available on all consoles at the time of release.
Take Two has confirmed the game will be releasing on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S | X in 2025.
Famously, Grand Theft Auto 5 took almost two years to finally release on PC, in April 2015. According to a former dev, the same might be happening here as Rockster said internally that their priority will be the PlayStation 5. So, huge win for PlayStation 5 havers, you’ll beat the “no-games” allegations this time.
It’s also unclear if the game will be available on the brand new Switch 2 when that console releases later this year.
We’re still a while away from that rumoured September launch. So before it’s beast of a sequel comes in and takes over, maybe get in another playthrough of GTA 5 while you wait. Or take advantage of the free time you have now before the game consumes your life for a few months after it releases (I know I will).
