Grand National 2025 LIVE results: Latest updates from Aintree as Nick Rockett wins

Nick Rockett wins the 2025 Grand National - (Peter Byrne/PA Wire)

Grand National 2025 LIVE!

Nick Rockett won the 2025 Grand National as Willie Mullins reigned supreme at Aintree on Saturday. The 33-1 shot, trained by Mullins and ridden by his son Patrick, won the world famous steeplechase. Last year's winner, I Am Maximus, finished second and Grangeclare West was third. Both were also trained by Mullins for a remarkable 1-2-3 in the grueling steeplechase.

Patrick Mullins said winning the storied race was "something I dreamed about since I was a kid." "It's a cliche," he said, "but when I was 5 or 6 years old, I remember reading books about the National. To put my name there is incredibly special."

The Grand National — a race for 34 horses over 30 fences — has long been regarded as one of the most dangerous horse races in the world because of the size of the fences, though a number of new measures were introduced last year in an attempt to make it safer. The 177th edition appeared to pass off without major incident. You can follow all the action LIVE with Standard Sport’s blog below.

Grand National 2025 latest news and updates

  • Nick Rockett wins the Grand National!

Good night!

Thanks for joining Standard Sport’s LIVE coverage of the 2025 Grand National!

What a way to finish!

It's Patrick Mullins’ day!

Green Splendour beats Destination Dubai and the National-winning jockey and trainer sign off with another success!

17:35: Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race

And they’re off!

17:35: Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race

17:39 , Malik Ouzia

They’re on their way down to the start now. It’s got a real last day of term feel about it, a big smile on Patrick Mullins’ face.

17:35: Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race

17:35 , Malik Ouzia

Needless to say we’re going to be a bit late off here as well because of the 15-minute delay to the previous race, though it looks like they may have made up some of that time.

17:35: Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race

17:35 , Malik Ouzia

Right then, onto the bumper and our final race of the day, and indeed the Grand National meeting.

The man of the moment, Patrick Mullins, is back in action here on Green Splendour, who has been backed into 4/1 favourite.

17:31 , Malik Ouzia

Good news: Broadway Boy has also now walked onto the horse ambulance and will be taken away for further assessment.

Kalif Du Berlais wins the Maghull Novices's Chase!

17:28 , Malik Ouzia

17:00 - Maghull Novices' Chase

17:18 , Malik Ouzia

Another Harry Cobden masterclass in these colours!

Kalif Du Berlais makes every yard to win for Paul Nicholls. A turnaround for Cobden, who had a nasty fall on Kandoo Kid in the National an hour ago.

Brookie runs a cracker for second, with L’Eau Du Sud only third.

17:00 - Maghull Novices' Chase

17:13 , Malik Ouzia

And they’re off!

17:00 - Maghull Novices' Chase

17:10 , Malik Ouzia

Right then, we have progress. The runners are on their way down to the start.

Kalif Du Berlais is your 2/1 second-favourite.

17:10 , Malik Ouzia

Tom Bellamy, the rider of Broadway Boy, has been taken to hospital to be assessed after their fall.

17:00 - Maghull Novices' Chase

17:03 , Malik Ouzia

As far as that trainers’s title is concerned, my word Dan Skelton could do with a winner here.

He’s got L’Eau de Sud heading the betting at 5/4 in a race that has £67,524 in prize money for the winner.

Willie Mullins does not have a runner.

17:01 , Malik Ouzia

We’re hearing that that delay is because Celebre D’Allen and Broadway Boy are still being assessed.

The former has just walked into the horse ambulance.

There’s also a stewards enquiry going on into the ride on that horse.

17:00 - Maghull Novices' Chase

16:59 , Malik Ouzia

Looks like there’s going to be a bit of a delay to our next race, I think as a knock-on of the National aftermath.

The runners are still in the parade ring.

16:55 , Malik Ouzia

Mullins confirms he will go all out for the British trainers’s title once again over the next few weeks.

Somewhere, Dan Skelton puts his foot through the telly.

And here's Willie...

16:53 , Malik Ouzia

“It doesn't get any better than this, to sire the winning rider and train the winning horse!”

Patrick Mullins talking to ITV...

16:49 , Malik Ouzia

"I had too good a start and was having to take him back all the way. I was wondering at the Canal Turn had I lost too much ground, but he just jumped fantastic.

"Then I was there too soon and it is a long way from the back of the last with Paul on my outside.

"It's everything I've dreamed of since I was a kid, I know it's a cliche, but when I was five or six years old, I was reading books about the National and watching black and white videos of Red Rum. To put my name there is very special."

16:46 , Malik Ouzia

Broadway Boy and Celebre D’Allen are still being assessed by the course veterinary team.

The former fell on the second circuit when leading, while the latter was pulled up quite close to home having run brilliantly at a huge price.

All the jockeys are back in okay.

More to come...

16:42 , Malik Ouzia

A reminder that we aren’t done yet. Still two more races to come, including the Grade 1 Maghull Novices’ Chase next at 5pm.

Here is that emotional Willie Mullins interview...

16:35 , Malik Ouzia

A family affair

16:31 , Malik Ouzia

The presentation is ongoing with the stage absolutely packed full of various Mullins’.

We’ve still not actually heard properly from Willie because he was too emotional to talk when interviewed immediately after the race.

All the reaction as we get it.

Mullins back in title contention?

16:29 , Malik Ouzia

No one will have been more gutted watching that result than Dan Skelton.

Skelton looked to have the British Champion Trainer title in the bag a few days ago, but Mullins has had an extraordinary week.

With the first three home there, he’s taken out £800,000 of the £1million pot, and that’s without the minor placings.

The title race may not be done yet...

A huge-price winner

16:25 , Malik Ouzia

Nick Rockett ended up going off 33/1 there. Seconds before the off on ITV’s coverage Ruby Walsh suggested he looked too big a price.

After a couple of years of relatively fancied winners, he’s the biggest priced winner since Noble Yeats won at 50/1 in 2022.

Nick Rockett wins the Grand National!

Extraordinary scenes at Aintree.

Nick Rockett has been taken off to cool down so Patrick Mullins is instead riding into the winners’ enclosure on the owner’s back.

The Grand National

Still more than a circuit to travel.

The Grand National

16:03 , Malik Ouzia

Broadway Boy takes half of the Foinavon fence with him but continues to lead around the Canal Turn.

Perceval Legallois is gone at Valentine’s!

The Grand National

16:01 , Malik Ouzia

And they’re off! Away first time!

The Grand National

16:00 , Malik Ouzia

Iroko has now displaced I Am Maximus as the favourite at 11/2. It’s an absolute smash-up.

The Grand National

15:59 , Malik Ouzia

Plenty of late money for Iroko, who is in to 7/1 now.

The Grand National

15:58 , Malik Ouzia

Bravemansgame is a little late getting out to the track, which means the rest of them are milling about down at the start.

The Grand National

15:56 , Malik Ouzia

Kandoo Kid and Three Card Brag are two of those to have been well backed. They’re into 14/1 now.

Grangeclare West is among the drifters, out to 40/1.

The Grand National

15:53

That’s the bell, calling on the riders to mount their horses and head out onto the track.

Almost showtime...

Jockeys on their way...

15:49 , Malik Ouzia

The traditional walk out of the jockeys in their array of colours. Just the five in the green and gold of JP McManus - best of luck to the commentators.

One of those, Paul Townend, is last out, bringing with him the trophy that he is seeking to defend with I Am Maximus.

Market check

15:46 , Malik Ouzia

I Am Maximus has been well supported in the betting all week and remains the 6/1 favourite.

Iroko and Perceval Legallois are the next two in, meaning owner JP McManus are the top three in the betting.

Stuptown and Vanillier, both for Gavin Cromwell, are next at 10/1 and 12/1 respectively, and its 14s bar.

The national anthem rings around Aintree - 15 minutes to go.

20 minutes to go...

15:42 , Malik Ouzia

The horses are in the parade ring, which is lined with punters. It looks an absolute picture in the glorious sunshine.

Grand National runners and riders

15:39 , Malik Ouzia

30. Hyland (FR) 10-6 Nicky Henderson

Jockey: Nico De Boinville

Grey has taken well to fences in encouraging novice campaign, and gets in towards the foot of the weights looking to break trainer’s long National duck.

31. Celebre D’Allen (FR) 10-6 Philip Hobbs and Johnson White

Jockey: Micheal Nolan

Was fourth over the National fences in last year’s Topham but is a 13-year-old now and this is an almighty step up from winning at Bangor on sole start this season.

32. Three Card Brag (IRE) 10-5 Gordon Elliott

Jockey: Sean Bowen

Interesting runner off a lowly weight. Second-season novice has some good graded form going back to his hurdles days and has often shaped like this kind of trip may bring out more improvement.

33. Twig 10-5 Ben Pauling

Jockey: Beau Morgan

Hidden over hurdles for most of the season, having been aimed at this since finishing second in last year’s Ultima at Cheltenham. Disappointed on return to fences at Doncaster last time, though.

34. Duffle Coat (IRE) 10-4 Gordon Elliott

Jockey: Danny Gilligan

Brought down when going well in the National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham and will enjoy the ground.

Glory for the grey?

15:33 , Malik Ouzia

There are no fewer than seven greys in the field, making up more than a fifth of the runners.

They include the likes of Vanillier and Kandoo Kid.

But how have greys fared historically? gg.co.uk have the answers...

Grand National runners and riders

26. Meetingofthewaters (IRE) 8 10-7 Willie Mullins IRE

Jockey: Danny Mullins

Was well-fancied for this 12 months ago and finished a credible seventh at 11/1. Form this season has been nothing to shout about but gets in off a similar mark and is still only eight.

27. Monbeg Genius (IRE) 9 10-6 Jonjo & AJ O’Neill

Jockey: Nick Schofield

Several placed efforts in good handicaps over the last few seasons before breaking winning drought at Uttoxeter in February.

28. Vanillier (FR) 10 10-6 Gavin Cromwell IRE

Jockey: Sean Flanagan

Second in this race two years and has now slid back down the handicap to a similar mark. Roared back to life over cross country fences at Punchestown in February and ran a stormer for Cheltenham third after almost taking the wrong course.

(Getty Images)

29. Horantzau d’Airy (FR) 10-6 Michael Keady

Jockey: Ciaran Gethings

Runner-up in the Kerry and Munster Nationals before Christmas, has since left Willie Mullins to join Michael Keady, who is seeking his first winner over jumps after taking out training licence in December.

Hiddenvalley Lake driven out to win the Liverpool Hurdle!

Robcour’s second string this morning but promoted to first after Teahupoo’s withdrawal.

Strong Leader is second, with Jetara producing a great run for third.

15:05: Liverpool Hurdle

15:09 , Malik Ouzia

Monmiral leads them up the home straight with a circuit to travel. All going well at this stage, although Home By The Lee has just needed waking up once or twice.

Away and racing in the final race before the National...

15:05: Liverpool Hurdle

14:58 , Malik Ouzia

Little more than an hour to go now until the Grand National but the small matter of some more Grade 1 action to come between now and then.

Kitzbuhel heads the market for Willie Mullins, having his first try at this level and this trip since joining the Closutton yard from France.

Strong Leader, who skipped Cheltenham to come here, and Home By The Lee, who was unlucky to unseat when going well in the Stayers’ Hurdle, come next.

Grand National runners and riders

14:45 , Malik Ouzia

22. Fil Dor (FR) 7 10-9 Gordon Elliott IRE

Jockey: Sam Ewing

Best known as a talented juvenile, proved just below top-class as a chaser. Still has plenty of graded form but has only once run beyond two-and-a-half miles.

23. Broadway Boy (IRE) 7 10-9 Nigel Twiston-Davies

Jockey: Tom Bellamy

Likeable, bold-jumping type who has always been considered a future contender for this kind of race. Pulled up in Ultima at Cheltenham last time, though.

(Getty Images)

24. Coko Beach (FR) 10 10-9 Gordon Elliott IRE

Jockey: Jody McGarvey

Wonderful servant who has danced every dance in Irish handicap chases and more recently over cross country fences, but probably on the downgrade now.

25. Stay Away Fay (IRE) 8 10-9 Paul Nicholls

Jockey: Paul O’Brien

Former Cheltenham Festival winner who even 18 months ago looked to have the potential to be top staying chaser. Career has taken marked downturn since.

14:30 Freebooter Handicap Chase

14:37 , Malik Ouzia

Cruz Control makes it back to back wins in the race at 10/1!

14:30 Freebooter Handicap Chase

14:20 , Malik Ouzia

The action keeps coming and we’re over fences for the first time this afternoon next for the Freebooter Handicap Chase.

Imperial Saint is your 3/1 favourite, with plenty of old favourites in here, including the likes of Happygolucky, Richmond Lake, Les Milos and Sam Brown.

Grand National runners and riders

14:15 , Malik Ouzia

18. Iroko (FR) 7 10 11 Oliver Greenall & Josh Guerriero

Jockey: Jonjo O’Neill Jr.

Owned by JP McManus and plotted for this race all season. Form of last year’s novice chase second to Inothewayurthinkin at same meeting now reads particularly well. Huge chance if getting the trip.

19. Intense Raffles (FR) 7 10-10 Tom Gibney IRE

Jockey: JJ Slevin

Last year’s Irish National winner was installed as the new antepost favourite following latest scratching stage. Beaten less than a length by Nick Rockett when giving away three pounds last time.

20. Senior Chief (GB) 8 10-10 Henry de Bromhead IRE

Jockey: Daragh O’Keefe

Pulled up in last year’s Irish National but began the new campaign with some zest when staying on to win Cheltenham handicap. Sixth in the Coral Gold Cup and is no more than an outside chance.

21. Idas Boy (IRE) 11 10 10 Richard Phillips

Jockey: Harry Bannister

Another at a monster price, was bought for new owners with this day in mind after winning Irish Midlands National last year.

A corking finish...

13:55: Mersey Novices’ Hurdle

14:04 , Malik Ouzia

Honesty Policy from a mile back to take it from Regent’s Stroll, who had made every yard!

A Grade 1 winner for Gordon Elliott, Mark Walsh and JP McManus.

Funiculi Funicula runs well for third.

And they're off!

13:58 , Malik Ouzia

A false start first time but eventually we are away and racing in the Mersey Novices’ Hurdle. All the late money was for Miami Magic...

13:55: Mersey Novices’ Hurdle

13:48 , Malik Ouzia

Our first Grade 1 action of the day up next.

It looks a wide open renewal of the Mersey Novices’ Hurdle and one that has lost a little shine with the withdrawal of Lulamba this morning on account of the ground.

Horaces Pearl is the 11/4 favourite for Fergal O’Brien, with Miami Magic, Honestly Policy and the much talked about Regent’s Stroll among the other market principles.

Grand National runners and riders

13:44 , Malik Ouzia

14. Chantry House (IRE) 11 10 13 Nicky Henderson

Jockey: James Bowen

Former Cheltenham and Aintree festival winner, rolled back the years to land handicap at the former track on New Year’s Day but that run looks an anomaly on all other recent form.

15. Threeunderthrufive (IRE) 10 10-12 Paul Nicholls

Jockey: Harry Skelton

Has run well in defeat behind course specialist Victtorino at Ascot twice this year. Trainer fears he is well enough exposed, though, and sidestepped this race last year over trip concerns.

16. Perceval Legallois (FR) 8 10-12 Gavin Cromwell IRE

Jockey: Mark Walsh

Another leading contender for the Cromwell team, disappointed as beaten favourite in Galway Plate and Kerry National early in the season. Has since landed pair of valuable Leopardstown handicaps, though, and is fancied.

17. Kandoo Kid (FR) 9 10 11 Paul Nicholls

Jockey: Harry Cobden

Looks to be the leading Nicholls contender and choice of stable jockey Harry Cobden. Targeted at this race since finishing third in last year’s Topham and won Coral Gold Cup at Newbury in November.

How have favourites fared?

We’ll pause our National build-up to turn attentions towards this afternoon’s opener, which is the William Hill Handicap Hurdle.

Co-favourites at the moment at 4/1 are Act Of Authority and Catch Him Derry, with Bill Joyce next in the market.

The letter is ridden by Jonjo O’Neill Jr., who has a massive ride coming up later on Iron in the big one.

Grand National runners and riders

9. Conflated (IRE) 11 11-2 Gordon Elliott IRE

Jockey: Jordan Gainford

Shock Irish Gold Cup winner in 2022 and plenty more graded form in the years that followed but beyond his best now. Last seen finishing eighth in Cheltenham handicap.

10. Stumptown (IRE) 8 11-2 Gavin Cromwell IRE

Jockey: Keith Donoghue

Left as trainer’s leading hope after Inothewayurthinkin withdrawal. Incredibly game in carrying top weight to land Cross Country Chase at Cheltenham and now follows the Tiger Roll route to Aintree.

11. Hitman (FR) 9 11-1 Paul Nicholls

Jockey: Freddie Gingell

Perennial bridesmaid, finishing second on all three starts this season and without a win since November 2022. Unproven at the trip.

12. Beauport (IRE) 9 11-1 Nigel Twiston-Davies

Jockey: Sam Twiston-Davies

Dour stayer who has won the Midlands and Berkshire Nationals in the last 13 months. Campaigned over hurdles since the latter to protect handicap mark.

Grand National runners and riders

12:51 , Malik Ouzia

5. Hewick (IRE) 10 11-7 John Joseph Hanlan IRE

Jockey: Gavin Sheehan

Popular ten-year-old who was famously purchased for £800 and won King George in 2023. A win over hurdles at Thurles in March looks to have set him up nicely.

6. Minella Indo (IRE) 12 11-3 Henry de Bromhead IRE

Jockey: Rachael Blackmore

Former Gold Cup-winning hero ran a fine race to finish third under Rachael Blackmore in this a year ago but is now a 12-year-old.

(Getty Images)

7. Appreciate It (IRE) 11 11-2 Willie Mullins IRE

Jockey: Sean O’Keefe

A Supreme winner in his novice hurdle days, scored for the first time in two years when getting his head in front at Thurles last time. Has never won beyond two-and-a-half miles, though, never mind this kind of trip.

8. Minella Cocooner (IRE) 9 11-2 Willie Mullins IRE

Jockey: Jonathan Burke

Fourth in what could prove a good Fairyhouse pointer last time out. Has winning experience over marathon trips, landing the Bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown last year.

Grand National runners and riders

12:39 , Malik Ouzia

Time to start our look at the National runners, which we’ll continue all the way up until the race at 4pm...

1. I Am Maximus (FR) 9 11-12 Willie Mullins IRE

Jockey: Paul Townend

Last year’s winner was sent off the 7/1 joint-favourite and galloped clear to win by almost eight lengths. Will have to shoulder top weight to defend his crown.

(Getty Images)

2. Royale Pagaille (FR) 11 11-9 Venetia Williams

Jockey: Charlie Deutsch

The only horse form this year’s Gold Cup left in the race, having finished sixth at Cheltenham. Multiple Grade 1 winner but best known as a course and ground specialist at Haydock.

3. Nick Rockett (IRE) 8 11-8 Willie Mullins IRE

Jockey: Patrick Mullins

Slightly disappointing as a novice over fences last season, but has come to the boil this term with fine victories in the Thyestes and Bobby chases in Ireland.

4. Grangeclare West (IRE) 9 11-8 Willie Mullins IRE

Jockey: Brian Hayes

Talented individual but clearly difficult to keep right. Chased Galopin Des Champs home in the Irish Gold Cup in February but then last of five stepping down in grade next time.

Grand National tips

12:04 , Malik Ouzia

Our tipster Johnny Ward is backing Hewick to land the spoils in the big one this afternoon.

(Getty Images)

Things are swinging in favour of the ten-year-old. He skipped the Cheltenham Gold Cup – and he must have had a decent chance of finishing placed in the Cotswolds with the terrain so lively – to give him the best chance of winning the National.

It has been the plan for Hewick for over a year and one could not be unhappy with his preparation. He ran a pleasing race over fences at Leopardstown and looked as good as ever when running away from his useful rivals reverting to hurdles at Thurles last month. Gavin Sheehan has been booked to steer the horse, who pretty much has as much class as everything else in the race or more.

The old spectacle is something of a glorified hurdle race these days compared to what it was. Whatever your take on the race that stops a nation's modifications this century, Hewick fits the profile. He has the quality, had a smooth preparation unlike others and, crucially, the ground he wants.

You can read more on Johnny’s case for Hewick and his selections for the rest of the card, as well as who will fill the places in the National here.

How to watch the Grand National

11:51 , Malik Ouzia

TV channel: In the UK, the Grand National is being shown live and free-to-air on ITV1, with coverage of the afternoon’s racing beginning at 12:45pm BST.

Coverage of the National itself is from 3:15pm, with the race getting underway at 4pm.

Live stream: The race will also be available to watch live and for free online via the ITVX app and website.

When does the race start?

11:45 , Malik Ouzia

The Grand National goes off at 4pm this afternoon.

A new, earlier time for the feature race of the meeting was introduced last year, bringing the race forward by 75 minutes, and remains in place for the 2025 edition.

However, we’ve got plenty of good racing to become before then, with the card getting underway at 1:20pm.

Grand National day!

It’s a glorious day on Merseyside, for one of the most popular days in the British sporting calendar.

It’s Grand National day at Aintree!
