Grand Designs fans stunned at 'vile' home that goes £1million over budget

Grand Designs is back - and fans have a lot to say about the first episode of the 23rd season.

The episode featured Colin and his wife Adele's 640 metre square Scandinavian-style house in Manchester.

The eight-year-long plan saw the couple go a whopping £1million over budget - and featured plenty of drama throughout the process.

During the episode, the couple quickly realised that their project was becoming more and more adventurous. The original £700,000 budget became £1.5 million. In the end the property cost the pair £1.7million "and a bit".

During the process, Colin dropped £250,000 on builders who were based in Latvia to handle building, glazing and cladding. This decision was made on the advice of his Swedish architect, who suggested that he could save money by shopping internationally.

However, Colin ran into a bit of trouble when disagreements and delays with the builders stretched out the process, and they eventually disappeared.

By the time the builders reappeared to finish the job, Colin had already hired new ones. It was also revealed that Colin's family business was a glazing firm, which stepped in to help him.

When the process finally began to come together, Grand Designs presenter Kevin McCloud said: "Not only does it have a chance at being finished, it has a chance at being great!"

While it went way over budget, and was no doubt a stress-filled eight years, the coulple loved the finished product.

However, the same can't be said for viewers of the show, who branded the home "vile" and "an eyesore".

One Twitter user said: "Most vile house I've seen on #GrandDesigns for some time. Looks like a cheap 60s town library."

Another added: "Wouldn't want to be their neighbours with that towering over the house, it's an eyesore. #GrandDesigns"

Others were disappointed with the direction of the show moving into its 23rd season, with one saying: "I remember when #GrandDesigns was about building your dream house yourself by mixing dirt and hay and not a bunch of rich men paying someone else to design and build an oversized monster of a house."

One other Twitter user was impressed with the couple's determination, and added that the house does have some modern style.

They tweeted: "I mean, it’s an extraordinary house. Like a modern stately home. But I think the stress of building it would have done for me before it was finished."

"Colin and Adele have true grit."
