Gran viciously attacked at funeral as daughter hears her plead 'help me, help me'

A grandmother was heard shouting "help me" as she was left with "sickening" injuries from a brutal assault at a funeral wake.

Belinda Stickland, 62, is in hospital being treated for broken ribs, a punctured lung and facial injuries following the incident at Splott Conservative Club, Cardiff, on June 9.

She had only arrived at the wake for her best friend's partner 20 minutes before being attacked as she stood at the bar speaking to a man, alleged her daughter Jinaise Joseph.

The attack on Ms Stickland, who is a grandmother of 12, happened "so quickly" added the daughter.

She said: "I wasn't there but I got a phone call and I could hear my mum saying 'help me, help me'. There was going to be a long wait for the ambulance so some of the staff at the club helped us get her to hospital.

"When we got to the hospital I couldn't go into the room. It was just horrendous.

"She is such a well-loved and well-liked person and the attack happened so quickly. I don't know how anyone could do this to her. Someone who has seen the CCTV footage of what happened said it was sickening and shocking."

Belinda remains in hospital and police have spoken to her and are viewing CCTV of the incident and carrying out forensic investigations, reported WalesOnline.

South Wales Police say they are investigating an assault which was reported just before 8pm on Friday, June 9 at the Splott Conservative Club.

A spokeswoman said: "A 62-year-old woman from Rumney is being treated in hospital for her injuries and enquiries are on-going."

They are appealing for any witnesses and anyone with information is asked to please contact them quoting occurrence *189387 .
