Gran beats lung cancer on the same day she is diagnosed thanks to pioneering surgery

A 61-year-old gran beat lung cancer on the same day she was diagnosed with the deadly disease.

April Boudreau, from Texas, was devastated after being told she had cancer during a routine check at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital clinic in January.

The brave grandmother had already defeated cancer three times before the devastating diagnosis.

April's scan showed a growth of abnormal tissue on her right lung and she was immediately told to come back to the clinic where doctors decided to treat her.

Medics put April under local aesthetic to perform the biopsy - just hours after the scan thanks to pioneering robotics.

Using cutting-edge technology doctors used a robotically-guided ultra-thin catheter to make tiny cuts and successfully removed the tumour.

After the minimally invasive thoracic surgery, April was up on her feet and walking about at home just three days after the operation.

She told the Daily Mail : "You pinch yourself because you can’t believe it’s true. This was all so simple, with no radiation or chemo."

April has a long history with cancer and has beaten Hodgkin's lymphoma twice in 1984 and 1985 and breast cancer in 2002.

But thanks to the state-of-the-art robotic-assisted technology medics at the Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth were able to identify her lung cancer much earlier than normal diagnostics tests.

The Texas hospital is one of the first to use the technology.

Dr Richard Vigness, a thoracic cardiac surgeon at the hospital, said: "The lung tissue containing the cancer is removed without the previously used large incision and the trauma of spreading the ribs associated with it."

The operation on April took just five small incisions and the next day she was allowed to go back home.

She revealed she took some pills for three days after the operation but was back on her feet just days later.

Due to having previously having cancer, April has to have a CT scan every six months to keep track of her - but is thankfully still cancer-free.

April said the only warning sign she had was being a tiny bit out of breath but had no idea it was cancer as she put it down to getting older.
