Grammy Awards 2022: Olivia Rodrigo and Silk Sonic scoop awards as Trevor Noah makes slap joke

Olivia Rodrigo and Silk Sonic were the big winners at the Grammy Awards tonight - as comedians rushed to joke about Will Smith's infamous Oscars slap.

The Foo Fighters - who tragically lost their bandmate Taylor Hawkins recently - were also honoured at this year's ceremony for a number of awards including Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Album for Medicine at Midnight.

Understandably, given the recent news, the band were not there to accept their award. There is expected to be a tribute to the late drummer during tonight's ceremony.

Trevor Noah hosted the show this evening and was quick to make a joke about Will Smith and the Oscars slapping saga as he opened the show. Will infamously slapped Chris Rock after he made a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith.

The comedian referenced Smith's warning in his monologue, telling the audience at the Grammy's this evening: "We're gonna be keeping people's names out of our mouths."

As QuestLove took to the stage to present Song of the Year he also made reference to the Oscars slap saga. "I trust that you people stay 500ft away from me. Just playing!" he joked.

Elsewhere, Kanye West also picked up an award tonight as he secured the prize for Best Melodic Rap Performance for his track, Hurricane. Tyler the Creator won the Best Rap Album for Call Me If You Get Lost.

Comedian Nate Bargatze arrived at the ceremony wearing a helmet, as the first jokes about Will Smith's Oscars slap started.

"Remain in your seats and keep your hands to yourself," host LeVar Burton joked.

Nate then replied: "They said comedians have to wear these now at awards shows during the joke part. It doesn’t even cover your face, I think it just focuses where you would hit me."

He later removed his helmet, before adding: "Alright, this is stupid" ahead of him presenting the Best Spoken Word Album.

There have also been wins for Olivia Rodrigo, who picked up Best Pop Solo Performance for her track, drivers license, and the singer stunned on the red carpet tonight in a beautiful black and purple ensemble.

Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance went to Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett for Love For Sale, whilst HER also won her first award of the night for Fight For You, which was honoured in the Best Traditional R&B Performance category.

The stars have been busy chatting on the red carpet, with Olivia telling Laverne Cox that she "could never have imagined in my wildest dreams" that she would be up for a huge seven awards tonight.

"I grew up watching the Grammys," she told red carpet host Laverne, whilst Saweetie looked close to tears as she told the actress that she never expected to be a Grammy nominee this quickly into her career.

Avril Lavigne also returned to the Grammys, two decades after her debut album. "How gnarly is that?" she told Laverne as she discussed it being 20 years since her first release.

As the show began, there were performances from the likes of Lil Nas X and Billie Eilish, as the first awards were handed out, including a gong for Best Country Album, Chris Stapleton.

Billie Eilish performed her track Happier Than Ever as she paid tribute to late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins with a special t-shirt, which had his face adorned on it.

Meanwhile, Olivia Rodrigo described it as a "dream come true" as she picked up the Best New Artist gong. She also won Best Pop Vocal Album, as she thanked her incredible fans for "changing her life".

She also thanked her parents for always believing in her and supporting her.
