Gloria Johnson, a member of the famous 'Tennessee Three,' is making waves in her campaign for the U.S. Senate this fall with the support of a powerful choir behind her. Led by Grammy-winning singer Allison Russell, more than 30 artists have come together to record 'Tennessee Rise,' an anthem advocating for social justice and equality in the state, with Johnson's candidacy at the forefront.
The Tennessee Freedom Singers, as they are collectively known, include a star-studded lineup of singers such as Brittany Howard, Amanda Shires, Brandi Carlile, and Maren Morris, among others. The song, penned by Russell and her husband JT Nero, features poignant lyrics referencing current social issues, including the aftermath of the tragic Covenant School shooting in March 2023.
The song's release comes in the wake of a controversial attempt by Republican lawmakers to expel Johnson and two other Democratic lawmakers from the Tennessee legislature last year. While Johnson managed to retain her seat by a narrow margin, the incident sparked widespread protests and discussions about gun laws in the state.
Russell, who has been vocal about the impact of the Covenant School shooting on her daughter, has been a prominent figure in advocating for change. Her efforts also extend to organizing events like 'Love Rising,' a benefit concert held to protest anti-LGBTQ+ laws in Tennessee.
The 'Tennessee Rise' project not only showcases the musical talent of its contributors but also serves as a platform for raising awareness and promoting positive change in the state. With its powerful message and emotive lyrics, the song aims to inspire unity and courage in the face of adversity.
