Graham Potter's Chelsea targets established with Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte example

The usual name of the game is not to rush into new managerial appointments with incredibly high expectations for the future. But the usual name is not Graham Potter.

In a survey of hundreds of football.London readers, nearly nearly three-quarters of Blues voters (67.6 per cent) believe the former Brighton boss is the right man for Chelsea - but the parameters of that particular job look to have changed.

Gone are the expectations of constant trophy-lifting and immediate gratification, apparently: 60.8% believe an appropriate expectation for Potter’s first year in charge at Stamford Bridge is a top-four finish, while another 57 per cent state Potter’s role is one of the long-term.

It is a distinctly different tune to that of previous managerial appointments, whose remit was more or less trophy-or-bust, with the lifespan of an average house mouse.

Chelsea have had an indifferent start to the Premier League season, securing just 10 points out of a possible 24 and sitting seventh in the table. Potter faces a heavy task in ensuring Chelsea grip a Champions League spot by season’s end, but the backing from fans and top brass bodes well.

Nearly 63% of fans believe Potter will still be in charge of Chelsea in two years, a time span that would make him only the third manager to do so in the last decade alongside Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.

Potter’s side take on Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday afternoon. The match will mark Potter’s first in the Premier League since he succeeded Thomas Tuchel earlier this month.

A win would make the hype feel real, and silence any threat of Harry Potter-themed trolling on social media.
