Graham Potter's biggest Chelsea worry as 'worst team in 10 years' slammed after Newcastle defeat

Graham Potter has numerous concerns that will likely keep him very busy over the World Cup break with Chelsea not in action until the resumption of the Premier League on Boxing Day. The former Brighton manager has come under heavy criticism for recent displays, but he will have six weeks to decide on a tactical approach for 2023 and work closely with those not heading to Qatar.

The narrow yet turgid defeat against Newcastle courtesy of a delicious strike from Joe Willock saw Chelsea suffer their third consecutive loss in the league for the first time since 2015.

Along with the three league losses in a row, Chelsea also lost to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday where they were unable to score. Armando Broja, who started against City, also got the nod for Saturday's fixture but he struggled to make any impact, before being replaced by Kai Havertz in the 73rd minute.

Speaking on Match of the Day, Ian Wright offered his thoughts on Chelsea's woes in attack but insisted Potter, like other Premier League managers at top clubs, needs time.

As a part of his analysis on BBC MOTD, Wright said: “Their main worries are the continuous changing of formation and 17 goals in 14 games is not a good front five.

“No team in the top half [of the Premier League] have scored fewer, and they only had seven touches inside the opposition box [against Newcastle].

“What I would say is that they [Chelsea] need to give him time. “[Jurgen] Klopp had time [at Liverpool] and we’ve seen what [Mikel] Arteta is doing [at Arsenal] at the moment. Hopefully he [Potter] will get that time.”

While Wright was justifiably critical of Potter, he was quick to suggest he should be given more time to implement his ideas. Others, seemingly, do not share that opinion though.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Tony Cascarino was ruthless when describing the current Chelsea team under Potter which included a particularly strong claim.

“My one reservation when Graham Potter got the job was that he’s basically a pragmatic manager but never really had centre-forwards," said Cascarino.

"They don’t look like scoring goals in the centre-forward position, but I can’t believe how many players are playing so poorly for Chelsea. That is what’s really surprising.

“What I’m watching now is probably the worst Chelsea team that they’ve had over the last 10 years because I really don’t know what they’re about."
