Graham Potter makes Liverpool 'quality' claim after Chelsea draw at Anfield

Under-fire Graham Potter was delighted as his Chelsea side frustrated Liverpool at Anfield.

The two mid-table sides slugged out a forgettable goalless Premier League stalemate in Saturday’s early kick-off.

Chelsea came closest when new £88million signing Mykhailo Mudryk twice struck the side-netting when coming off the bench for the final quarter.

And Potter said: “We were happy with the performance of the team, with the energy, the spirit and discipline we had.

"It’s never easy coming here because of Liverpool’s quality at Anfield. We accept the point and move forward in a positive way.”

Of the decision to bench Mudryk, Potter added: “He couldn’t have started. He hasn’t played since November, he hasn’t had any game time. It was the right thing to do. I liked what I saw. He was really good and he will get better the more he’s with us and the more we understand him.

“Sometimes coaches think they magically turn players into top players, but there are top players. The signs are positive.”

The dreary draw did little to bolster the Champions League qualification hopes of either side, with both Chelsea and Liverpool remaining in mid-table.

But Potter said: “Rather than worry about what’s going to happen in four or five months time we have have to concentrate on the next day and the next match. The number of players we have missing is approaching double figures and that would affect any team. And you have to understand the effect of the transition we have been going through.

“I’m excited for the rest of the season. I’m always excited although sometimes you have to suffer and we have suffered this season.”
