One of the country's most wanted fugitives, who evaded capture for more than a decade by allegedly changing his identity and appearance with wigs and fat suits, has been remanded in custody in Melbourne.

Graham Gene Potter had been wanted by police since February 2010, when he failed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court to front conspiracy to murder charges.

He is believed to have spent most of the time since keeping a low profile in Far North Queensland.

On Monday, he was arrested in the small mountain township of Ravenshoe, a two-hour drive west of Cairns, where he had been living in squalid conditions in a shack.

His arrest was captured in dramatic camera footage released by Queensland police.

Mr Potter was released into the custody of Victoria police on Tuesday and was extradited to Victoria on Wednesday evening.

He appeared via video link at a late-night sitting of the Magistrates Court on Wednesday night.

Mr Potter did not make an application for bail and was remanded in custody.

His lawyer Damian McNally said he would seek protective custody for his client.

Court documents reveal Mr Potter has been charged with two counts of conspiracy to murder, dating back to January 2008.

It is alleged he was contracted to kill a man at the wedding of the son of Melbourne underworld figure Mick Gatto.

On top of that, he has been charged with trafficking a commercial quantity of methamphetamine, again dating back to 2008.

Mr Potter is also facing a charge in relation to allegedly skipping bail in 2010.

He will return to court for a committal mention on May 18.
