Graham Potter confirms Wesley Fofana injury news but delivers positive update about Chelsea star

Graham Potter has confirmed Wesley Fofana will be sidelined for a "few weeks" due to a knee strain he suffered in the Champions League win against AC Milan.

Fofana came off in the first-half of the game against Milan in the week because of the injury, just moments after he scored his first goal for Chelsea. The 21-year-old defender left Stamford Bridge on crutches, but Potter said it was not as bad as he initially feared.

"Wesley's knee, not as bad as we thought," the Blues head coach told reporters. "After the game, we were concerned. It will be a few weeks, I think. Consider it better than it could be but he's out for a few weeks."

Potter was then asked if Fofana, who signed for £70million from Leicester City over the summer transfer window, has a chance to recover in time for the World Cup later this year. He replied: "Yeah, that is a possibility.

"It depends on how his rehab goes. I wouldn’t want to put too much of a timescale on it, but there’s a possibility of that, yes."

Another blow for Chelsea is the absence of N'Golo Kante. The France international has been sidelined since the second game of the season in August where the Blues drew with Tottenham at Stamford Bridge.

However, he is now getting closer to returning from his hamstring problem. It won't be this weekend, though.

"He’s doing more and more integration with the team," Potter said on Kante. "He’s still not ready for the weekend but he’s getting closer."

Meanwhile, Potter confirmed Marc Cucurella is fit enough to feature once again. The Spaniard was named on the bench on Wednesday following an illness, but Potter did not call upon the wing-back in west London.

"Fully recovered now," the Chelsea head coach said on Cucurella. "He's had more recovery so will be involved tomorrow."
