Graham Potter confirms conversation with Chelsea board amid sacking rumours ahead of Tottenham

Graham Potter has confirmed that he has spoken to Chelsea's board this week and that the message remains the same. The Blues boss has come under increasing scrutiny after Chelsea's 1-0 defeat to Southampton, with the result appearing to signal a point where a contingent of supporters lost faith.

There have been reports of a strategy meeting held earlier in the week, after Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali provided their support to the 47-year-oold head coach. That comes despite Chelsea having just recorded three points once so far in 2023 and only scoring once in their previous five matches.

Potter did acknowledge there is some frustration from the hierarchy however.

He said in his press conference: "Yes, I've spoken to them and it's the same as it's always been. There has always been support. I've been under pressure here for four months from you guys. 'Have you spoken to the owners? Do you have their support?' That continues and they've been great, brilliant. They also see where we're at but at the same time are frustrated because the results are what they are and we have to do better."

The Blues boss did not hide from the fact that his time in charge has brought difficulty. Potter has previously described the Chelsea hotseat as one of the hardest jobs in football.

The former Brighton boss suggested that difficulties were apparent for the squad even before he arrived however.

He said: "It's really tough. My quote a few weeks ago was that this is probably the toughest job in football, and there are a lot of factors for that. There was a sub-optimal pre-season – and speaking to a few of the experienced guys, they thought it was the worst pre-season they've had for different reasons. That isn't to blame anybody for the reasons. It's just that it happened."
