Graham Potter Chelsea contract length revealed as Todd Boehly eyes long-term project

Chelsea have officially announced Graham Potter as the new head coach, having triggered his release clause from Brighton on Thursday. It comes as the Blues moved quickly to replace Thomas Tuchel, who was dismissed from his role just one day prior to the appointment.

The change in head coach comes from new ownership Clearlake-Boehly, who decided that a change in direction was needed to meet their goals. Tuchel had got off to a difficult start to the season, having lost to the likes of Southampton and Leeds as well as falling to defeat at the hands of Dinamo Zagreb in his final game in charge.

The German coach was deflated after, saying: "I'm angry at myself, I'm angry about our performance, this is a huge underpeformance from all of us. It's not precise enough, it's not clinical enough, it's not aggressive enough on the ball, it's not determined enough, it's not good enough individually, it's not good enough as a team."

The decision came before that defeat though as Todd Boehly tries to steer the club in a new direction with a new philosophy. This could be seen in part during the transfer window, with some younger players brought through for big transfer fees to try and build for the future.

Potter is a manager that could get the best out of those players, having shown is ability to do so at both Swansea and Brighton in his time there. His style of football was attractive too, playing a free flowing game, but one that needs time to implement and a full buy-in to the process.

There remains question marks over whether he will get that time, given Chelsea's tendency to sack managers under the previous regime and the quick nature at which Tuchel was dismissed under this. However, Boehly has clearly shown faith in that process, giving Potter a five-year deal at the club.

It remains to be seen if he can impress as he has done so when climbing up the managerial ladder. However, if he has time then he could go on to do great things at the club.
