Graffiti appears on West Lothian pub following controversial name change

THE sign on a West Lothian pub has been vandalised in what appears to be a protest over its recent name change.

The Willow Tree, formerly known as the Black Bitch, in Linlithgow, has been at the centre of controversy for the past year following owner Greene King’s decision to change the pub’s name.

The pub retailer said the previous name had “racist connotations”. The original name dates back to the 17th century and referred to a centuries-old story about a black greyhound which remained loyal to its owner while he was imprisoned.

The West Lothian Courier has reported that one artist got their own back by spray-painting a picture of a dog peeing onto the new sign.

Local resident Murdoch Kennedy said: “A huge thank you to whoever was responsible for this” while others described it as “hilarious” and “superb” for “taking the p**s out of Greene King for once”.

Protesters were enraged at the decision with a campaign started to keep the name of the pub.

Greene King wanted to change the name to ensure the bar was “more inclusive” and did not offend anyone.

Greene King has been approached for comment.
