Graeme Souness slams 'shocking' Scotland following loss to Ukraine

Graeme Souness laid into Scotland and insisted they simply aren't good enough following their World Cup semi-final play-off defeat to Ukraine.

The ex-Scotland captain caused controversy ahead of the game by stating he wanted Ukraine to win.

He watched on at Hampden as Steve Clarke's men were soundly beaten 3-1 by a classy Ukrainian side, reports The Daily Record.

The country's top pundits were on hand to deliver their verdicts on the events at the national stadium, with Ukraine now set for a showdown with Wales in Cardiff on Sunday.

And Souness was peeved at a poor performance as he delivered his go-to scathing verdict. He eviscerated the Scots after the Croatia defeat in Euro 2021 and he was 'saddened by the performance' at Hampden tonight.

Here's what the Scotland icon and other pundits had to say:

Graeme Souness

"I think you have to say over the 90 minutes the best team has won tonight. In the first-half they were fabulous, I thought they'd done the job at 2-0 but, through pure grit and determination, Scotland got back into it.

"In terms of the chances Ukraine had in the 90 minutes, it could've been a sore one for us tonight.

"The only thing you can say is their goalkeeper was an absolute pudding. He doesn't look like he's up for it at this kind of level.

"It's a sore one for us to take but, at the end of the night, you have to say we were second fiddle.

"We're talking about getting the ball wide, pushing two centre-halves up - I'm talking about in the latter stages of the game to try and retrieve the situation - but that's not what modern football is about. It's not what football is about.

"It's about cute and clever passing and we never had that tonight.

"They did, in abundance, and that's something we have to look at if we're to be a threat at this level and qualify for World Cups, we have to be a better football team.

"Not a team that's scratching around looking for a last-minute equaliser by throwing the ball into the box looking for a big man.

"Overall tonight we just didn't play enough football, we gave it away for fun. We just didn't have the quality in there to really sustain any pressure on the Ukrainians.

"We're just not good enough, and that saddens me to say that.

"For a back four to concede a goal like that? It's shocking. It's the simplest goal."

Kris Boyd

"Their goalkeeper made a few mistakes, not just for the goal - go and ask questions of him.

"There was a couple of outswinging corner-kicks, a couple of free-kicks, where you wanted us to go and put the pressure on their goalkeeper and we never done it.

"But we could sit here and make excuses all night, but the best team's won."

James McFadden

"Maybe one of the poorest performances I've seen in terms of the energy to go and press, and maybe put Ukraine under pressure and to test the goalkeeper.

"We saw he was a bit dodgy, to say the least, but I think the Ukraine were excellent. Their energy and intelligence was excellent.

"Even their subs - it could've been more.

"Ukraine for me fully deserved it and we can have no complaints."

Ally McCoist

"I think the brutal facts are we were beaten by a far better team. I think it's as simple as that.

"We're a good side but I think we were beaten tonight by a very good side."

Craig Levein

"Nobody could argue that wasn’t the correct result.

"We spoke about Scotland’s inadequacies in the first half but Ukraine played well.

"Craig Gordon made some unbelievable saves to keep Scotland in it but losing the second goal so early in the first half put us up against it.

"Steve did change the system after that and I did think we looked better.

"It gave us an opportunity to get more control over the match but a 2-0 start against a team of this quality, you are asking a lot to get back into the game and we just couldn’t do it."

Tom English

"Congratulations to Ukraine, they deserved it.

"Everything that preceded this for them, the training camp and obviously the disasters in their country, the lack of competitive football for six of their starting line up and they’ve come here and destroyed Scotland.

"3-1 is not even close to being a fair reflection of it.

"At 2-0, 2-1 Scotland huffed and puffed.

"But Ukraine had so many chances, they were by far the better side and they completely deserve to be going into the final against Wales."

Willie Miller

"We got a lesson in football tonight. I've not seen a Scotland team so outplayed in every department, with so many chances created against them.

"Craig Gordon did what Craig Gordon does. It could have been an embarrassing night for us, but I really enjoyed watching Ukraine. The shape was totally wrong right from the start. At the back, we were all over the place."

Pat Nevin

"Scotland needed to get into the game second half but they lost that goal and the plan was out the window again. They didn't play anywhere near their best.

"This is a moment of real beauty for Ukraine."

Alan Hutton

"This moment is amazing, it's truly special. What they're going through, what they're feeling now - and they fully deserve it.

"Well done Ukraine, they were outstanding."
