Graeme Souness' seven best moments as Sky Sports pundit as Liverpool great moves on

Graeme Souness bid an emotional farewell to Sky Sports on Sunday evening after Liverpool's dramatic 4-3 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield.

Bringing to an end his 15 years working with the broadcasting company, Souness' decision to depart is understood to be mutual having reached the end of his contract.

Writing in his latest Daily Mail, the Scot claimed it 'meant a lot' his final game for Sky involved Liverpool and that he had thoroughly enjoyed his time working covering some of football's biggest games.

As the curtain draws on Souness' stint with Sky, we have taken a look at some of his most memorable moments as a pundit.

Premier League title win

Highly emotional after Liverpool ended their 30-year wait for the English top-flight title, the 69-year-old was thrilled after Jurgen Klopp's side were finally confirmed as champions in June 2020.

Sharing his thoughts on the side that ended the Reds' long wait for an elusive trophy, he said: "They've been fabulous, this team. It's not just about this season, if you go back two years in the Champions League final which they lost to Real Madrid, went back the following year and won it but missed out to Man City.

"This is a special team. This is the team, going forward, you can't say they'll win it every year but they'll come very close to winning this trophy and the big European one."

Similarly to Phil Thompson, who was also being interviewed, Souness could not hide his smile when discussing the success of the 2019/20 team.

#WheresGary?

Shortly after the Reds were officially declared title winners, Sky Sports released a light-hearted video at the expense of Gary Neville. Titled 'Has anyone seen this man #WheresGary', the likes of Jamie Carragher and John Barnes starred in a special clip to track down the former Manchester United right-back, who months earlier claimed he 'may have to move to Papua New Guinea' if Liverpool were to win the league'.

A standout moment arrives in the form of a humours exchange between Sky Sports presenter David Jones and Souness as the search for the Bury-born defender continued. After hearing Jones respond 'I don't know who you're talking about' when asked of Neville's whereabouts, Souness is then seen pointing at Jones in serious fashion before saying "Don't tell me lies!"

The video ends with Neville boarding his flight to Papua New Guinea in a disguise, attempting to avoid any form of interaction with Liverpool fans.

'That cat didn't do anything wrong'

West Ham defender Kurt Zouma hit the headlines in February of last year after a video of him kicking his cat across a kitchen surfaced on social media.

The actions of the Frenchman quickly became a major talking point within the media, and Souness left many football supporters perplexed when asked for his views on the incident.

"I've got zero sympathy for him," he said of Zouma. "The vast majority of West Ham fans would not be accepting of him. For me if you're looking at that video the cat hasn't done anything wrong. It's abuse for entertainment.

"I have major problems with it, for me looking at that video, that cat hadn't done anything wrong. It was picked up and abused for entertainment. They're laughing. The fact it goes out on social media suggests they didn't think there was anything wrong with it, they thought people would find this amusing."

While the general message of the five-time First Division winner with Liverpool was not up for dispute, some found his analysis of the innocent cat similar to that of a player who had committed an error during a game on Super Sunday.

Paul Pogba praise

Many individuals were proven right over their criticism of Manchester United's £89million man, Paul Pogba, who offered next to nothing during his second spell at Old Trafford.

Billed as the man to turn United into title contenders once again, the 30-year-old was a major disappointment and delivered few moments of quality. Unafraid to call out Pogba for a lack of attitude and application on more than one occasion, Souness made no secret over the fact he felt the France international was a player who failed to put in the required effort to succeed as a United player.

"I get hammered [for criticising Pogba]," he said in 2020. "I’m a fan of his talent, but midfield is the only position on the pitch where you’re playing against someone doing an identical job. I want him to go and say to himself, ‘I’m going to work harder today, I’m going to have a better game’. Instead of saying, ‘I want to show how clever I am’. I’m a fan of his ability, but I want him to work harder."

Souness took the Sky studio by surprise during the Red Devils' 2-1 home win over Everton in October 2018, however, after singling the now Juventus midfielder out for praise. "Pogba's been really good," he admitted, producing shock reactions from Jamie Redknapp and Jones.

Asked in 2020 what he made of Souness' comments over the years, Pogba told the United podcast: "I didn’t even know who he was, really. I heard he was a great player and stuff like that. I know the face but [not] the name. Like I said I’m not someone that watches a lot of [punditry], I watch a lot of football but I don’t stay after the game to listen to what they say about why they did this or why they did that. I like to focus on football.”

Homophobia speech

After attending Brighton Pride in 2019, Souness later went on air to discuss how this altered his views on homosexuality.

Sparking a debate on this topic live on Sky Sports, he began: "The PFA and the Premier League have to look at themselves. You have to ask the question why has no one ever come out?

"I think football has not created an environment where anyone would feel comfortable or confident about saying 'I am gay.' There must be gay players and bisexuals playing in the Premier League there has to be but no one has been comfortable to come out and say, 'This is me.'

"I came from a generation which was extremely homophobic. Nine months ago, I went to a parade here [Brighton] and it was enlightening. I learned so much and it changed my attitude."

Keane and Neville left red-faced

The current Premier League season may not have gone to plan for the Reds, but one game that will be remembered regardless is the 7-0 battering of United at Anfield.

No doubt in his mind ahead of kick-off that Liverpool would get the job done, Souness said: "It's a long time since I've been this confident about a Liverpool win against United." Both Roy Keane and Neville could be seen smirking in the background after hearing this remark, though had little to be happy about after watching their old club ship seven goals against their bitter rivals.

Taking the opportunity to make the most of this historic triumph the former Reds boss was quick to remind his colleagues of their dismissal regarding Liverpool's chances of claiming three points.

"Gary put it on me at the start of the show if I would repeat on air if I thought Liverpool would win well today. Gary said off air he thought Liverpool played badly today. For me, they’ve [United] got away lightly today, it could have been more than seven. They didn’t turn up," stated Souness.

Neville then described United's 7-0 loss as a 'freak result', prompting Souness to add: "You've lost six (6-3 to Man City) already! Is that a freak as well? Any time United lose it's a freak!"

'Why are you looking at me like that?'

Renowned for his no-nonsense approach both as a player and pundit, this rule certainly applied when asked by David Jones for his assessment of Liverpool's performance after drawing 1-1 with Manchester United during the 2019/20 title-winning season.

Expressing his belief the Reds were worthy of their point, Souness paused mid-sentence before asking Jones: "Why are you looking at me like that? Do you not agree with me?"

Taken aback by this comment and looking to diffuse the situation, Jones replied: "I was just wondering whether they are [other pundits] agreeing with you." Concluding this exchange, Souness added: 'It was just the way you looked."
