Graeme Souness has spoken out about the enormous potential of Rangers as the club nears a potential takeover by 49ers Enterprises, suggesting that the Ibrox giants could outgrow Leeds United in the years to come.
In an interview with the Daily Mail, the former Rangers player and manager addressed the speculation surrounding the impending deal, with the investment arm of the San Francisco 49ers closing in on acquiring the Scottish Premiership club.
If the deal goes through, the 49ers, who currently own Leeds United, could soon hold the keys to Ibrox, potentially setting the stage for a new era at the Rangers.
The prospect of Rangers becoming a ‘feeder club’ for Leeds has been raised, given the 49ers’ existing stake in the English club, who are in the mix for automatic promotion to the English Premier League.
However, Souness believes that if the takeover is successful and the right investment is made, Rangers have the potential to far surpass Leeds in stature.

“Any prospective buyer of Glasgow Rangers will quickly understand that they are not just buying a football club – they are buying an institution,” Souness explained.
“If it were to be the 49ers, there’s early talk that Rangers could be a feeder club for Leeds. But if they were to take Rangers up a few more rungs, I believe it could be the other way around. There’s such huge potential to take this club to another level.”
Souness’ comments suggest a bold future for Rangers, one where they could become the leading club in any potential partnership, elevating the Scottish powerhouse to new heights on the European stage.
The 49ers’ financial backing could prove pivotal in unlocking that potential, but it’s clear from Souness’ words that Rangers’ rich history, vast support, and worldwide reputation could put them at the forefront of any new ownership structure.
As the 49ers move closer to finalising their deal, it seems Rangers fans will be hoping for a future where the club isn’t just playing catch-up with Celtic, but leading the charge on a wider footballing stage.
